Youth and optimism flourish in Lyon’s 7th Arrondissement, where you’ll find a number of universities and schools beside leafy parks and cafés. A range of activities keep its young inhabitants and visitors busy, while relatively new shops and bars are creating an alternative subculture. Stroll along the riverside promenade and enjoy the picturesque setting.

Capturing the rejuvenated theme of the district is the Halle Tony Garnier, a former slaughterhouse converted into a concert hall. Attend an event in this iconic arena, where Coldplay, Phil Collins, Justin Timberlake and other famous artists have performed.

Continue on this youthful path at Université Lumière Lyon 2, which was established in 1835 and has several preserved historic buildings. Visit the exclusive 19th-century École Normale Superieure de Lyon that is considered among the best universities in the world.

Get a feel for the local passions by going to a Lyon OU rugby game at the Stade de Gerland, which seats more than 25,000 fans. You can also watch soccer at the enormous Parc Olympique Lyonnais.

Learn about the city’s involvement in World War II at the fascinating Museum of the Resistance. The city was for some time the nucleus of Free France, before it was eventually occupied by German troops in 1942.

Note that the district was officially formed in 1912, having previously been part of the 3rd Arrondissement.

The quarter lies a little south of the city centre of Lyon, along the eastern side of the Rhône River. Take the metro to Place Jean Jaurès or Debourg in the centre of the district and get around by tram or on foot. Cross the river for the 2nd Arrondissement or head east for the 8th Arrondissement.

The 7th Arrondissement has a youthful exuberance, a bohemian charm and world-class venues for entertainment and sports.
