Casualties of World War I are remembered here at this memorial site which is also home to a comprehensive museum dedicated to “The Great War”.

In 1919, people in Kansas decided to commemorate the lives of men and women that fought and died in World War I. With that the Liberty Memorial Association was formed and along with the citizens of the city, they raised $2.5 million dollars and planned the Liberty Memorial in just 10 days. This phenomenal feat is testament to the public support towards those who perished in the war, with over 150,000 people gathering on the lawns below to witness its opening in 1926.

In 2006 after a 102-million-dollar investment, the National World War I Museum opened at the Liberty Memorial and today it stands as the America’s official World War I museum. The draw of this museum is that the exhibitions and displays also tell the story of the war before America's involvement, so it appeals to both locals and tourists alike. Artifacts have been collected and donated throughout the years, some of which include personal items from soldiers on the frontline, military vehicles as well as documents of national importance.

A trip to Liberty Memorial and the National World War I Museum is an emotional experience that will touch your heart, while the many informative displays will provide you with a fascinating history of the time. Interactive displays engage the user showing them the perils of war. Rent one of the audio guides on offer and enhance your experience. A war-damaged tank, life-size trenches and a walk-through bomb crater make for sobering viewing. If you'd like a little fresh air, your admission ticket allows you entry to climb to the top of the memorial where breathtaking views of the grounds and Kansas City await you.

The Liberty Memorial and the National World War I Museum can be found across from the Crown Centre, just off Main Street in Kansas City. It opens from Tuesday to Sunday and the entry fee permits access for two days. Free parking is available also.
