This area of Marmara Region has about 11,200,000 people.

The national capital of Ankara is situated 220 miles east of Istanbul, while Adalar is 12 miles to the southeast.

Istanbul is truly unique. No trip here is complete if you don't see the Hagia Sophia and the Hippodrome. It is also famous for the Blue Mosque and Topkapi Palace.

Miniaturk and Vialand are wonderful places to enjoy some quality time with the children. For more fun with the family, head onwards to Aqua Club Dolphin and Babalu Park.

Do you and your traveling partner want to see some aquatic animals? If so, make sure you stop at TurkuaZoo. Even more ocean adventures await at Istanbul Aquarium and Istanbul Dolphinarium.

Pack some lunch and enjoy some time to yourself in the leafy surroundings of Taksim Gezi Park and Gulhane Park. Emirgan Park and Parkorman are two more pleasant spots to while away a lazy afternoon and catch up on some reading.

Are you craving some salty ocean air? There's enough coast here to keep you busy for a day or two. Pack some food and drinks and head on over to Kilyos Beach or Suadiye Beach. Buyukcekmece Beach and Florya Beach are also highly recommended.

Want to escape the stresses of city life? Head out to Camlica Hill and Piyer Loti. Suada Island and Aydos Hill are also recommended by nature enthusiasts.

Grab a friend and explore some of the favored exhibition spaces nearby. The Museum of Innocence and the Istanbul Military Museum offer a range of displays and collections that are bound to keep you captivated. You might also want to consider a visit to the Rahmi M Koc Museum and the Istanbul Toy Museum.

The Maritime Museum will send you traveling through this region's seafaring history. Bubbling over with hearty tales and maritime artifacts, the entire crew is bound to enjoy this one.

Plucked straight from the natural world, the captivating specimens at the Istanbul Archaeology Museum and the Sadberk Hanim Museum have many surprises up their sleeves.

Istanbul is a hive of artistic energy, with galleries all over the place. Soak up the cool atmosphere at the Istanbul Modern Art Museum and the Pera Museum. If you have time afterwards, the Sakip Sabanci Museum and the Mosaic Museum are also well worth a look.

History enthusiasts will enjoy passing the afternoon at the Panoroma 1453, where they can learn about tomorrow by studying the forgotten past. To get a better picture of how things were for previous generations, why not also explore the fascinating exhibits at the Adalar Museum or the İstanbul Museum of the History of Science & Technology in Islam?

To discover more about the people and places of this region's past, pay a visit to at least one of its many historic monuments and buildings. Commence your history tour at Basilica Cistern and Galata Tower. You might also like to pull out the camera for some photos at the Cagaloglu Hamami and Maiden's Tower.

Watch the rushing water under Halic Koprusu and Topkapı Harem, two terrific examples of civil engineering.

A look at Yedikule Hisari and Anadoluhisari is a rewarding way to find out about the region's military history. Anadolu Hisari Fort and Yedikule Zindanlari are two more places that have played an integral role in shielding Istanbul from attack.

When it came to designing and building Dolmabahce Palace and Beylerbeyi Palace, you'll see that money wasn't an issue. Yildiz Palace and Kucuksu Palace are two more stately dwellings that have their fair share of tales to tell.

Old-world castles that look like they were plucked out of a fairy tale, Rumeli Hisari and Riva Castle make an interesting stop for tourists of all ages. For even more picturesque sights and historical stories, go and explore Yoros Kalesi and Anadolu Kavağı Kalesi.

Whether you consider yourself a spiritual person or not, you'll be sure to enjoy a trip to the Suleymaniye Mosque and Chora Church. If you want to check out a couple more religious sites, check for tours at Church of St. George and the Rustem Pasha Mosque.

After touring all the principle attractions around Istanbul, make time to see some of its less well-known sights. Galata Bridge and French Street are some possible options. Also, contemplate a trip to Istiklal Avenue and Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge if you've got the time.
