"Very good and family friendly experience. The staff were friendly and helpful, overall an excellent stay. The only complaint would be that dinner at 2 of the 4 restaurants felt a little like a conveyor belt where the priority seemed to be getting us fed and out as quickly as possible rather than having us enjoy the dining experience. With that said the experience at the other 2 restaurants was excellent."

Nautilux Rethymno by Mage Hotels

8/10 Good

"Over all hotel is nice , Everyone working here was nice and kind . Anyhow for 5 star hotel shower enclosure is only 2 stars…. It is no door from living area to the bathroom,so it is crazy cold when you get out from the shower, and enclosure itself is ridiculously uncomfortable, Other thing -guests are allowed to smoke in a balcony,no separation between smoking and nonsmoking rooms,so you will smell disgusting cigarette smoke all day long… Also -5 star hotel does not have heated pool ,so October 12 th pool temperature was 15 degrees Celsius-that is absolutely ridiculous…please invest some money for your pool heating,so guests, who paid for 5 star hotel can enjoy it …"

Dyo Suites

10/10 Excellent

"The room was enormous! Cool Modernist design, nice touches like a coplementary fruit bowl. Discounts for eating in the restaurant. We didn’t end up trying the spa services, but they were extensive and either free or reasonably priced. My only complaint is that our room was right at street level and our patio visible (albeit just barely so) over the shoulder-high wall separating us from the street, which got noisy during the day. I suggest requesting a second floor room!"

Aquila Rithymna Beach

8/10 Good

"BEAUTIFUL MAINTAINED GROUNDS. FRIENDLY HELPFUL STAFF. WE HAD A PARTIAL SEA VIEW BUNGALOW - THE VIEW WAS GOOD & BUNGALOWS ARE LOCATED IN A QUITE PART OF THE RESORT. LOVED OUR BALCONY ( RM 30). MAIN CRITICISM OF THE ROOM IS THE OVER BATH SHOWER. WHOEVER PLANNED PUTTING THE TAPS IN THE CENTRE OF THE BATH AS WELL AS THE WIRE RACK & SOAP DISPENSERS HAS NEVER TRIED TO STAND TAKING A SHOWER IN THE BATH WHILST FIGHTING THE PLASTIC SHOWER SHEET - IT IS DANGEROUS . I CANNOT IMAGINE HOW HEAVIER / LARGER PEOPLE MANAGE IT!!. RECEPTION - VERY RESPONSIVE TO ANY REQUESTS IE COFFEE NOT TOPPED UP WAS QUICKLY RESOLVED. RESORT AMENITIES: POOLS BEAUTIFUL & WELL MAINTAINED. AQUA PARK GOOD FUN. BARS/RESTAURANTS: MAIN BUFFET BREAKFAST - EXCELLENT FOOD CHOICES BUT VERY BUSY. BETTER OPTION HAVE BREAKFAST IN PERGOLA SIDE - TABLES WIDER SPACED - FEELS LESS HECTIC. LOVED THE GREEK RESTAURANT / FOOD & STAFF. AL A CARTE RESTAURANT LOVELY. BEACH BAR - LOVELY DRINKS BUT UNDER STAFFED SO SERVICE CAN BE VERY VERY SLOW!!! SERVICE AT MAIN BAR POOR WHEN ON LOWER LEVEL. FAILED TO BE SERVED OUR DRINKS ON 3 OCCASIONS WHEN ORDERED DOWNSTAIRS. RESORT IS VERY CHILD FRIENDLY. WOULD I GO BACK - PERSONALLY THINK THE AI PACKAGE IS OVERPRICED AND THE ROOMS ARE NOT REALLY 5*. IN SPITE OF THIS WE REALLY ENJOYED OUR STAY"

Grecotel Plaza Beach House

10/10 Excellent

"We booked a room at the last minute. There will a little mix up upon arrival but the hotel upgraded us and bought us dinner to compensate us. Honestly, there was no need. The hotel was fabulous and the staff could not have been friendlier. The beach area was perfect and exactly what we wanted during our time in Greece. Rethymno is a lovely town and not nearly as busy as Chania, which made a huge difference. We would definitely go back to this hotel."

90m2 Pool, Pool, basket, playground, soccer, volley and more!

10/10 Excellent

"We were a party of 9 adults and 2 children, and have just returned from this lovely Villa. On arriving we were met by the cleaner's and the owners mum. They were so friendly and welcoming. Well of course the, children were so excited on seeing the large pool it was clothes off and straight in. I think some of the adults not far behind. The owners mum showed us around the villa. Deffo jaw dropping, was exactly as we had seen on site but much better. The pool, basketball court (great bonus) with the adult boys, volley ball, football pitch and finally gym equipment. Brilliant. The hosts parents cooked us stuffed tomatoes, peppers, bread, tazsaki one evening oh what a treat. Adonis the owner was always on the end of a text if I needed him. He came to clean pool every 3rd day and always happy to chat to make sure everything was good. The cleaning was also on 3rd day.Local bus stop across the road which was very handy to go into Rethymno roughly about every 1hr. But Adonis will give you a timetable when he sees you on arrival day and talks you over do's and don'ts.Unfortunately it was time for us to leave very sad , but it was lovely to see Adonis and his parent's come to wave us off.If we had one minor moan, that was my grandson had to sleep in upstairs kitchen, which was not really suitable as no door into kitchen and on a bed settee, but we made it work and it wasn't going to spoil the holiday. So thank you Adonis we have no problem in highly recommending Villa Mary."

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Houdetsi?

The best area to stay in Houdetsi is within the village centre itself, particularly around the main square and the surrounding streets.

Houdetsi is a small, traditional Cretan village, and its centre is the focal point. You'll find a few local tavernas, coffee shops, and the village's cultural centre within easy walking distance. The streets are narrow and winding, typical of a historic village, offering a glimpse into local life.

For travellers looking for a peaceful retreat and an authentic experience, staying in the village centre is ideal. It allows for easy access to local eateries and the chance to observe daily life. It's also a great base for exploring the surrounding countryside, with walking trails and vineyards nearby.

Couples seeking a quiet escape will appreciate the relaxed pace of Houdetsi.

When is the best time to go to Houdetsi?

The best time to visit Houdetsi is during late spring (May to early June) or early autumn (September to October) when the weather is pleasant and the island is less crowded.

The wildflowers are in bloom, making the landscape particularly picturesque. This period is ideal for couples who enjoy hiking and discovering the natural beauty of Crete, as the trails around Houdetsi are easily accessible and offer stunning views.

Early autumn provides similar comfortable temperatures, with the added benefit of the sea remaining warm enough for swimming if you plan a trip to the coast. This time of year is excellent for those who appreciate local culture and events, as many traditional festivals and harvest celebrations take place across Crete, some of which might be found in or near Houdetsi.
