• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition caused by extended periods of inactivity, can be a risk on long-haul flights. Walk around the cabin and give your legs a stretch or do some simple exercises in your seat to improve your circulation.

• Have your travel documents and passport within close reach. They're the first things you'll be asked for by security.

• Can't travel without your favourite hand and nail cream? No problem. As long as it's in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and it's stored in a zip-lock bag, you're allowed to bring it with you in your carry-on baggage.
• It's also likely that you'll need to remove your shoes for scanning, so wearing slip-on sneakers is always a clever idea.
• Airlines won't allow any sharp items or pocket knives in the cabin. If you need to bring these kinds of items, pack them safely in your checked luggage.
