• A plane trip can be a cruisy experience if you bring the right gear. Firstly, you'll want a few basic toiletries, such as toothpaste, a toothbrush and some deodorant, a spare change of clothes and a good read. Secondly, leave space in your bag for your electronic gadgets, chargers, any daily medications and perhaps a blow-up neck pillow too. Lastly, don't forget to take your passport, travel documents and your credit cards.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• While the list of restricted items differs between air carriers, the general guide to follow is nothing flammable, sharp or explosive. This includes things like screwdrivers, knives, aerosol cans and bleaching agents. Sporting equipment like hockey sticks, and objects that could injure passengers, such as pepper spray and guns, won't be allowed on board either.

What to wear on a flight:

• Go for comfort over style. Prepare for temperature changes by dressing in layers, and opt for closed-toe, flat shoes like sneakers.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a risk on long-distance flights. It results from blood clots forming due to poor circulation and inactivity, so do some gentle foot and leg exercises in your seat and consider wearing compression socks.

The trick is to be well organised before you get to security. That way, you'll be hopping onto that plane to Stockholm in a flash. Follow these tips and get your holiday off to a flying start:

• Security personnel first need to make sure that you have a valid passport and matching travel documents before you're allowed to proceed any further. Have them ready to show.
• Time to strip down. Well kind of. Your belt, jacket, keys and other contents of your pockets, like your headphones, will need to go through the X-ray machine. Make the whole process faster by removing them before your turn.
• For just a few minutes, you'll have to unplug from technology. Your tablet, phone and any other electronic devices will need to be sent through the scanner.
• Any gels or liquids, such as toothpaste or perfume, that you want to bring on board need to be in containers no greater than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres). Also, they all must fit inside a quart-size (one litre), clear zip-lock bag.
• There's a good chance you'll be required to take your shoes off to be X-rayed, so wearing slip-on shoes is always a good idea.
• Airlines will not allow any sharp or pointed objects in your carry-on luggage. If you need to bring these kinds of items, pack them safely in your checked luggage.
