• A plane ride can be a comfortable experience if you bring the right stuff. First things first, you'll need basic toiletry items, such as deodorant and a toothbrush, a spare change of clothes and something to read. Next, find a spot in your bag for your phone and charger, your important medications and maybe a cosy neck pillow too. Lastly, be sure to take your passport, travel papers and your bank cards.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Leave all your full-sized bottles of shampoo and hairspray in your checked luggage. Any liquids or gels in your carry-on suitcase larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) won't be allowed on. Sharp or pointed objects, like your treasured pocket knife, and products which are flammable or explosive, such as aerosols and fireworks, are also not allowed.

What to wear on a flight:

• Your main priority is to feel as comfortable as possible. Opt for shoes that are easy to slip on and off, dress in loose, natural-fibre clothing and don't forget to bring a jacket in case you get cold in the cabin.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a risk on long-distance flights. It's the result of blood clots forming due to poor circulation, so do some gentle foot and leg exercises in your seat and consider wearing compression socks or tights.
