We had a pleasant stay! Spacious bathroom although you need to mind your head going through the doorway. Kids room was a fun space but better suited for younger kids.

Great place,will definitely go again
Arrived 1 hour before check in and it wasnt a problem. Was met by jon on arrival and he was fantastic. Helpful, friendly, lovely guy to talk to and nothing seemed to be a problem. We had a 4 week old baby with us and it wasnt a problem. Was shown to our room which was absolutely lovely. Clean, comfortable, cosy and lovely and warm with the under floor heating. A extra heater was also in room if needed but definitely didnt need it. The shower was great and bed really comfortable. Free netflix as well which is an added bonus. Log fire was on in the entrance which made is lovely and warm and also gave that more welcoming feel. The bar and food area wasnt open due to it being out of season so we walked to the local pub which was about a mile away. Breakfast was simple but great. A good choice of food was included. Would definitely go back again. Peacful, relaxing and tranquil. And jon was brillant. The only thing that we can say was a bit annoying was when we booked it said on booking to ring 24hrs before arrival. I tried all day ringing the number the previous day on the number provided and had no joy in getting an ansew. We finally received a text at 9.30 at night to say everything was fine. I understand people are busy. But communication could of been better. Apart from that absolutely loved our stay. Thank you

Saddened
On arrival host was unclear of our booking, the room was much smaller than anticipated and on the advertising 'photos they have moved and reused furniture and one photo is not even of the room the finishes were rough the wifi poor, open shower room toilet ? the lobby shown in photo was actually the breakfast room, which filled with smoke from pizza oven on two days, i had to suggest propping door to clear, but worst of all was the all night persistent humming vibration through the bedroom wall, coming from what sounded like and old freezer motor kicking in, did not sleep for two nights left on the third day as needed some peace and quiet. there was a bell to ring but did not seem to work, the host were very friendly and polite which I cannot fault , but in respect to the accommodation and situation everything was too laid back, this is a rental property charging upper rates not there home, all in all disappointed as did not want to be and feel let down and out of pocket, which I regret as was my wife's birthday and the whole eco eclectic thing was right up our street but unfortunately not the experience I was expecting

When you arrive, the driveway is just a dirt road. No covering. Full of potholes and water. The room is pokey. Some parts haven't even been finished. The bath overflow was missing. The bathroom 'door' consisted of a bookcase which slid round and which you couldn't close properly so no privacy. The wall decoration included plastic plants and leaves. Timber was loose or not even fixed. The beds were really uncomfortable. There was no wardrobe, just a hanger behind the tv. There was little in the way of soundproofing. We could hear people coming up the stairs and talking. Early in the morning the people next door turned their television on at 7.00am and we could hear it clearly. Not happy at all. The area was nice and we will be going back again but certainly will not be staying at this place.

Haha!! Ok. 4 out of 10 !! That's a bit harsh. Hahah! No more than that, it's nonsense! All the Lodge rooms are underfloor heated throughout and kept at a temperature of 19 degrees throughout the year and the duvets are 13.5 tog so they are super cosy and snug - no matter what. This suits 99% of our guests but if not we can turn the heat up - or down - in an instant and if you're a bit chilly in the middle of the night there's a little extra heater to give you a bit more. If something is not right you just need to say the word. The Lodge Rooms are part of the Dome Garden site where, not only can you book the rooms - or one of our domes - for a discount, but it also says if you have a problem then speak to us! We are here 24 hours a day and can normally fix things in a flash. But don't run away silently and literally half an hour later write a review the make no sense. Oops. That's not helpful and really its not fair on us or our staff who work tirelessly to make sure everyone has the best possible time. So there it is, come and stay see how lovely it is here, enjoy the atmosphere - including our lovely snug rooms. In the main season you can amble around the garden and look at the domes, sit around the fire pit and chat to other guests and join in our twice weekly pizza night or for the moment at least watch our our amazing new treehouse going up. So much to take in here, both on site and out and about in the amazingness of the Forest of Dean - one of England's most untouched forests. Don't take Lynns word for it - come and see for yourself!

The accommodation was very quirky and I think would come as a bit of a shock to anyone not used to camping. We stayed in the Forest Store and we had a comfortable stay, but we are pragmatic people and just get on with it. Our main concern was the wobbly bath that wasn’t plumbed in properly. Trying to wash our hair in there without so much as a hand held shower head was difficult and anyone older than us might struggle. Also getting in an out of the bath was tricky as it was so high sided. Style over substance I think. A major concern is no plumbed in overflow. Trying to avoid getting water on the floor was therefore a challenge. Mopping up after our ablutions, not much fun. Filling the kettle in the basin again very awkward. High level cleaning does not appear to take place. The room, wardrobe section behind the tv was layered with spiders webs. The bathroom ‘door’ doesn’t completely close due to the moss walls obscuring it and even if you do manage to close it to, there is no door knob on the bathroom side making exiting very tricky. The one bed head was fixed to the wall making it very difficult to retrieve something I dropped under the bed, and I found it didn’t appear to have been cleaned under there for ages. The corridors smelt of grease too…I think this aroma was coming from the kitchen equipment. There was a complete lack of signage. The track to the property is long, quite rutted and dark at night. At first we were unsure we’d arrived!

A jewel of a find
The location really was magical, not only the inside and outside decor but the fact that the forest of Dean is literally on the door step. The hosts were fabulous and couldn't have been more helpful, including us in the 'build your own pizza' evening that was so much fun. The bath in the coal shed was incredible and after a long day kayaking and walking, was just what we needed. We look forward to staying again!

Hugely Overpriced & Disappointing
Paid £360 for a 2 night stay in 'The Retreat'. Lets just say the pics they have do them a REAL favour...until you get there Before travelling we had a few questions, based on reviews we had read from previous guests. Over the space of 3 days we sent messages via 5 different means....finally getting a reply the evening before we travelled with the excuse 'it's a really busy time for us'. No matter how busy, a quick text or whats app reply to our message with a promise to get back to us takes 30 seconds. Left a feeling that the owners didn't care enough about an imminent arrival. The 'what3words' proved useful to find the place....we dug this up ourselves from their facebook page as they still don't deem it neccessary to put some signage up at the end of, what looks like a track that says 'private no access forestry commission' so doesn't exactly scream it's the right track to take. Parked up...no signage to reception...happened to be what turned out to be one of the owners on their way out who pointed us in the right direction. 'Check in' was rushed to say the least. Shown to the room, 'back' door to the room which was really close to the car to get luggage in was locked, keys missing and no attempt made to find them 'ah steps are a bit funny that way anyway'. So we had to haul our bags right the way around the entire site. One of the kids then found keys for us. No wood for wood burner, or firelighters, or instruction how to use given or provided. Stumbled across what ap

Very nice stay anf lots of fun.
It's very nice short stay. The location is good which is close to the Forest of Dean. We lived in the Refuge Lodge. It gives a feeling of excitement of adventure. We loved the pizza night on Saturday with fun of making pizza by yourselves. My girl loved the camp fire at night especially and the swings on site. Its very good for short stays who would like a different experience to hotels, especially for families with little ones.

Don't waste your money on a dirty overpriced farm. Parking isn't adequate or easy to find down a pothole gravel road, no signposts so don't even know if your in the right place. Rude staff, rowdy parties going on in the tents. Photos make it look like a nice place to relax, its not, don't waste your money on this overpriced accommodation.

Oh John, That’s not very nice is it. I think that must be the worst review we’ve ever had in 12 years!! …and, you must admit, it’s not entirely the whole story! So, here’s what really happened. You were in thee most terrible mood when you arrived - and you were really early. So we, actually I, did ask you to wait a little while the room, which had only just been vacated and which you had only booked one hour before, was prepared and cleaned. As I remember the weather was lovely and you settled down on a chair overlooking the firepit. The sun was shining, the site was empty and we were surrounded by nothing other than the trees and the sound of birds in the forest. We had a nice little chat about your extensive travels and that you were needing just to “chillout” for a couple of days over the weekend. I thought it was gong rather well. So well, in fact, that I went off to the kitchen and was about to offer you a cold beer while you waited. But when I turned around, you had vanished into thin air, never to return. It’s such a shame because it really is the most lovely (and very clean) little suite of rooms. And because it is off to the side and so close to the forest it’s a joy to go to sleep in front of a roaring wood burner and wake up to the sound of the dawn chorus in the morning. The dead end leading up to us does have a few potholes mind. But we don’t repair them because a.) it’s not even our road and b.) it does make people drive very, very slowly. That means it’s really safe at this end for all of our tiniest little guests when they are milling around like uncontrolled Daleks in the car park. I guess the last thing is the cost. Well, you did take an entire suite for yourself. So it would have seemed like it was a bit more but normally it’s for four people who would be paying £45 a head, per night. That’s cheaper than any B&B within a few miles and we like to think a whole lot more delightful.

Awesome place, don’t expect 5 star accommodation though. It’s friendly and more quirky and original than boring and neat. Owner and staff are extremely friendly and down to earth. We loved it, stayed in the lodge room not the dome tents, but would love to stay in the tents.

Shocking
Drove 2.5 hours to hotel, to be told 20 mins before i arrived that they have double booked the room. Used a reward night to lay for room so couldnt book another one and had to drive back home. They said both bookings came in at same time which caused the confusion, and then in next sentence said the other people have priority because they enquired about their booking 2 weeks ago. At one point tried blaming covid and lack of governement funding for mix up on their system. Very insulting to try that one with two school workers. Very upsetting experience with no compensation offered at all

Hmm - oh dear. This potential guest booked a room whilst staff were at the door accepting a 'walk-in' booking from a women who had enquired about the room, but not confirmed, two weeks before. It was unfortunate that the two events happened in quick succession but that's just the way it is. We do not receive any form of alert about bookings made through Expedia so rely on checking our emails ever so often to see what has come through. Sadly we didn't see the email for an hour or so by which time this man had jumped in his car and travelled in our direction without bothering to confirm this very last minute booking. I guess our advice for anyone using Online Travel Agency booking like this is if you are booking something on the afternoon you want to stay then it is a good idea to double check that the booking has actually gone through and, as sadly couldn't happen in this case, can still be fulfilled. And if it goes wrong maybe some manners and a little perspective rather than screaming down the phone at us, slamming down the call and resorting to abusing us on a review. It has to be said his 'school worker' claim seems odd. He told us he travels abroad for work for nine months of the year and books short term hotels to accommodate him throughout. Strange school he works for. despite that, and as I said to him at the time, we're all having a tough time through the pandemic. Unlike all other key workers across the country hospitality workers haven't been paid a penny for the last 18 months. So spare a thought.

Attention to detail
Overall our experience of the hotel was sadly poor. The hotel has a lot of potential, however there are no signs around the place to tell visitors where to go on arrival and we were shown to the reception desk by a guest... After we were greeted, my wife and i were shown to the wrong room and asked after 2 hours to move. Both rooms we stayed in were riddled in cobwebs in the corners of the rooms and although the particular styles of room are difficult to keep clean, it was evident that no one had attended to this in some time. After looking through some feedback om reviews, it was also clear that the hotel had not taken on board guest advice as attention to detail has been missed around the hotel. I strongly believe that this hotel has potential if some of the reviews are actioned. A word of warning to anyone who has a nice car, the drive way is a stony, gravel path with very large pot holes down it. I really hope this hotel pays more attention to detail as it would make all the differnec to customer experience.

Aspects let it down
We did arrive early, so thought we would try our luck. The place is not at all sign posted and when we pulled up we was confused as to where to go, no signs or people to tell us where we needed to go. One of the owners was gardening but did not speak and the other was at reception which look cluttered and closed. She did not come off the phone for quite a while despite us looking lost and when she did come off she was quite abrupt. She spoke to us like we were children telling us we are too early basically go away haha when we walked away she questioned why we was walking by where people want privacy. Again how was we too know? We went away and when we came back to check in there we work nobody around so we sat waiting. The lady needs to work on her customer manner as she does not make you feel welcome. The gentleman checked us after he finished gardening and was far more welcoming so thank you. The room was tidy but a little unclean around the shower, nothing major. We could not close the window so through the night we got cold. Bed was super comfy though and facilities were good. I think because of our initial welcome to we got off on a bad foot. Scenery is stunning.

Sadly the pandemic seems to have brought out the worst in a just a few people. Checkin times are there so we have a chance to turn rooms around. We are a tiny operation so have just a few staff and we can't accommodate unreasonable requests! We are in the middle of a forest so if people want to arrive early it's always fine. But we do, of course, suggest they park their cars and go for a little walk through the amazing woods until we can get to them . If you arrive four hours early - as these people did - then we can only suggest they find something else to do for a while. That 'something else' is self evidently not invading the - very obviously private -glamping encampments on the opposite side of the property. At last not without having the good sense or manners to ask first if that is a good idea (in the middle of half term when the site is clearly full of people with tiny children trying to enjoy their holidays without being peered at by grumpy strangers!). What were they thinking? So, manners and good sense, two things we all need to remember in these difficult times and two things that were sadly missing from these two extremely rude and badly behaved guests. No wonder they thought they'd been treated like silly children!!

Relaxing stay
Really interesting quirky place. Somewhere we will remember. There is one big watch out on our Woodshed room - no door on the toilet so whoever you’re sharing with shares everything with you and some very steep steps down to the bath. We were staying out of peak season so there were only 3 rooms booked out which meant we had the shared area to ourselves. Warning for others staying out of main season is there was no food or drink facilities so no option to buy breakfast or dinner or a drink at the bar. We were fine because we bought stuff for breakfast and a few bottles of wine and brought it back and ate out for lunches and dinner. Very relaxing stay and we’d recommend it.

My partner and I stayed here for our anniversary and it did not disappoint. Jon was there to greet us on arrival and showed us around making sure that we knew where to find everything and he even helped us find somewhere good to eat. When we got back Jon joined us in front of the fire and we chatted into the night. The next day we were given a lovely big breakfast. This really is a fantastic place and Jon made us feel very welcome. Thank you so much for your hospitality and we canmot wait to come back.

The decor of bringing the outside in and the natural charm of the 200 year old barn make the room an absolute delight and pleasure to stay in . No matter how many time you look around the room always something new and intriguing to see , the Hosts were lovely very attentive and helpful , the amenities were spot on and the breakfast was delicious 10/10 will definitely be returning .

Lianne and Jon were so helpful, friendly and were fantastic hosts. Dome lodge was quirky and well presented. The room i stayed in was upstairs. On first appearance i was wowed. I spent 3 nights there. It suited me being a solo traveller. The bed was really comfy. The only constructive critism i could say are tiny things that could be put right. It would be helpful to have hooks to hang towel in shower and toilet. Maybe a blackout blind on toilet window. Hooks to hang coats. So nothing major. I think the only bigger issue would be that if youre a couple and not at a stage of feeling comfortable with bathroom antics. There is no door to the toilet or shower. This wouldnt necessarily bother everyone. The location was petfect for exploring the forest of dean area. Breakfast was nice but quite basic but did cater for dietary requirenents. It would be nice if breakfast was included in the price of booking. Overall, a fantastic stay and i would definetely return. Mant thanks
