On a quiet suburban street west of Hyderabad you’ll find one of the city’s oldest temples. It’s surrounded by stunning lakes and woodland.
Just west of Hyderabad lays the enchanting village of Chilkur, home to the oldest temple in the area. On the banks of Osman Sagar, a great lake, the temple attracts pilgrims and tourists year-round who come to embrace the serenity and meditate in the lush surroundings. Visit the temple to escape the busy pace of Hyderabad’s streets or simply to admire the great temple that is the pride of the quiet village.
Visit the temple early to avoid the crowds. Grab a bargain from the street vendors that greet you at the entrance before moving inside. As you walk through the vibrant entrance, painted in bold blues, pinks and yellows, you’ll be overcome by the spirituality of the place. Remove your shoes to continue through the temple to admire its simple interior.
Cross the floor to reach the small entrance to the inner sanctum, home to a shrine to Lord Balaji. Watch as devotees of the temple perform a ritual to the lord consisting of 11 circumambulations, a vow and a prayer.
Built more than 500 years ago, Chilkur Balaji Temple is dedicated to Lord Balaji but doubles as the home to the god of visas. Each year travellers, corporate businessmen and those hoping to be granted new visas make the pilgrimage to pray at the temple. The temple does not accept offerings.
After you’ve seen inside the temple, explore the charming streets and stores of Chilkur. Take a walk along the banks of Osman Sagar at dusk to watch the sun set over the water.
Chilkur Balaji Temple is located 25 kilometres (15 miles) west of Hyderabad and is serviced by public buses. There are many nearby attractions, including the Mrugavani National Park, so a day can easily be spent in the Chilkur region.
