A collection of classic automobiles and historic family heirlooms fill the rooms of this regal palace, which has rolling lawns and bold statues outside.

Architecturally striking, historic Chowmahalla Palace was once the home to Hyderabad’s ruling family. The palace is decorated lavishly, both inside and out, and is loved for its sprawling grounds and intricate interior decoration. Home to the Nizams of Hyderabad during the 1800s, the building is said to be a replica of the Iranian Shah’s Palace. Chowmahalla Palace features 5 hectares (12 acres) of paved courtyards, water features and manicured gardens.

As soon as you arrive you’ll come to understand why the name Chowmahalla translates to “four palaces”. Joined by a series of connecting courtyards, the four separate palaces of Chowmahalla are each characterised by different styles of architecture. Walk through the Southern Courtyard to see the European-influence of Aftab Mahal, the largest of the palaces.

Wander through the Northern Courtyard, an opulent corridor flanked by entrances, to see the temporary exhibition space in the Council Hall. See artefacts from the 19th century before continuing to the Durbar Hall at the heart of the Chowmahalla Palace. Its marble columns, glittering chandeliers and Belgian crystal would seem out of place in much of India and are a sign of the great dynasties of the past. Listen for the ticking of the 150-year-old clock at the top of the Clock Tower on your way to see a vast collection of 20th-century cars.

Emerge from the palace to find yourself surrounded by green lawns and shrubbery. Photograph the glimmering exterior of the palace from the grounds before relaxing amongst the trees and ponds.

Chowmahalla Palace is located in the heart of Hyderabad on the south side of the Musi River. The easiest way to reach the palace by public transport is taking the Shah Ali Banda and Charminar buses but arriving on foot is easy from most central locations. The palace is closed Fridays and public holidays and a small admission fee applies.
