3.9/5

Visit the town of Childers for a restful stay surrounded by lush pastures and fruit orchards. See native animals in the fantastic wildlife parks and explore the quaint architecture of this historic town.

Experience the excitement of the Snakes Downunder Reptile Park. Emerald-green tree snakes, cute koalas and inquisitive emus are among the 45 species of native Australian animals that inhabit the wildlife park. Join a guided tour to learn about the different creatures. Touch a non-venomous carpet snake and gasp in wonder as the giant saltwater crocodile is fed.

In the Flying High Bird Sanctuary marvel at the sight of thousands of beautiful birds in the vast aviaries. Walk through the bird enclosure and see rainbow-coloured parrots and noisy cockatiels among the tropical vegetation. Kids will enjoy watching the beautiful birds as they crack open seeds and nuts during feeding times.

Admire the vintage architecture of the iconic Paragon Theatre in Childers’ town centre. Watch classic movies in this heritage-listed landmark, which has retained many of its original features from when it was built in 1927. The theatre’s family-friendly café has a pleasant outdoor section and is a great place to enjoy coffee and cake before the film.

Spend a pleasant few hours on a tour of Ohana Winery & Exotic Fruits. This winery creates unique wines and liqueurs using tropical mangos, starfruit and hibiscus flowers. Linger over a gourmet lunch platter and glass of wine or stroll through the beautiful orchards. Tour the other vineyards on the Childers Wine Trail. Trail maps can be obtained at the Childers Tourist Information Centre in town.

Childers is located about 75 kilometres (46 miles) east of the domestic airport at Hervey Bay, which has flight connections to the state capital of Brisbane. Reach Childers by bus or rented car.

With exciting wildlife experiences, charming architecture and renowned regional produce, Childers is a great place for the whole family to explore.
