Liked: Cleanliness, staff & service
I liked the staff! I liked that it was near the beach, shopping and restaurants. I also like that it's only a 10 minute drive from the city center/historic town. I did not like vendors coming up to me while eating my breakfast in the outdoor seating area. I did not like that property has alot of cracks and holes.
Great location but the hotel was dirty. We walk into our room and the door could not close properly. The bathroom had hair in the shower and sink. The room was dirty and had a smell. The staffs were nice and friendly.
I truly wish there were a lesser rating to give the Baluarte Cartagena Hotel Boutique. In addition, I wish guests who have stayed there would leave an honest review. The rooms have old and outdated furniture. The sofa had paint speckles and a burn mark in one of the cushions. There was no blanket on the bed. I left out for the day, and when I returned, the room was not cleaned; when I asked why the room was not cleaned, I was told that the front desk has to be notified if a guest wants the room cleaned or serviced. The lobby aesthetics give a false perception of what to really expect in the room. Further, the safe in the room did not work to safeguard valuables, and when I brought it to the attention of the staff, I was told that they were aware of it and that they were trying to get a safe to put in the office to hold guest valuables for a fee. Also, if someone wanted to visit you, they charged a 50mil Colombian Peso fee, which is about $12-13 USD. At no time did they offer a discount or reimbursement for all the issues just a means to find a way to charge more hidden fees.
1st we have to keep in mind that the place is near the coast, its located in a very convenient spot, you can walk around and have a lot of options to dine in. The staff is friendly, they will help you and accommodate your needs , its not like a city hotel, so don’t expect that experience. The rooms decent sized, the bathrooms were a bit small. I kept hitting my elbows with the shower doors. One time we were out and when we came back there was a leak in plumbing in the bathroom, the offer us to move us to another room, we stayed in the same room and they did the best to fix it, it was Sunday and they moved us to a bigger room like a day before and we decided to stay, it was not a big deal. In the first floor they have a restaurant with a very good menu. The only thing we had a bit issue was with the cleaning, we requested to get the room cleaned because of a bit of sand on the bed and when we came to sleep we still had sand on our linen of the bed so that was the only issue. But over all was not a bad experience.

Disliked: Amenities
Staff was OK, but one giant issue: the hot water is basically non-existent above the first floor. The water pressure is so bad, that twice the water turned off completely while I was in the shower. And about the water - the hot water was non existent as well, being only perhaps 1 or 2 degrees above the temperature of the cold water.
When I first reported this, they told me some nonsense such as "oh, most people like cool showers when they come in and it's been hot all day". Guess what - I rather choose for myself if I have to or want to take a cold shower or not.
Then about the lack of water and it turning off, they told me it's kind of "normal" around the area. In fact the day before I saw people in a restaurant taking water in buckets up the stairs to work in the kitchen. Now I get why they were doing that.
Eventually the got the water a little hotter - apparently turning up the furnace temperature. Are you really that cheap that you turn it nearly off? And why hasn't anyone else complained?
The included breakfast is OK, but nothing that you would write home about. The area is OK and easy access to food, shopping, and the beach. Oh, about the beach - google it - the beaches in this area are lets say..... pretty sad. Most will tell you to not bother, and go to a private beach club, preferably on one of the islands.
A couple of the staff where friendly. But keep in mind the issue about the hot water and the water pressure. Book at your own risk.
