Spread over a few city blocks in the centre of downtown Memphis, Beale Street is the place to discover the city’s legacy of music, entertainment and history. It was here that Louis Armstrong, B.B. King, Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash carved a path out for themselves, helping to build a name for “Memphis Blues”. Still to this day, Beale Street is lined with nightclubs, concert venues, restaurants and galleries and it's one of the most fun destinations in the city.
Travel back through the decades as you explore the Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum. The work of the Smithsonian Institution, the museum showcases the many tales of the artists behind the blues movement.
Stop for a bite to eat and a drink at the Hard Rock Café. Once upon a time the site was a recording studio frequented by rising stars and today many of the names and faces have been immortalised on the restaurant’s walls. If you don’t have time to visit Graceland, the upper floor will give you a glimpse into the life of Elvis Presley thanks to its vast collection of memorabilia and paraphernalia.
Pick up some souvenirs to remember your time in Memphis from the A. Schwab Dry Goods Store. With a legacy that goes back more than 130 years, the shop has long been central to the locals that live around Beale Street. Rummage through the items on the shelves of Beale Street’s oldest store to find small trinkets and household items.
The street doesn’t just look backwards when it comes to music. Much of Memphis’ contemporary music scene still centres around the strip, and the small clubs and bars that line it are the perfect place to catch the next generation of big bands in an intimate setting.
After the show, take a stroll along the length of Beale Street to soak up the bright lights, the iconic landmarks and the pulsating nightclubs. End your walk in Tom Lee Park, on the banks of the Mississippi River. Each year, throughout the month of May, the Beale Street Musical Festival descends on the park, showcasing local talent and many international artists.
While Beale Street is one of the most-visited attractions in the city, it also acts as a gateway to countless other attractions in the area. Use it to reach the Peabody, Memphis Botanical Garden and Graceland, all within a 20-minute drive of the street.
