The Army Museum North Queensland proudly showcases the heritage of the region’s past and present military units and personnel. Check out historical exhibits that display artifacts spanning the first defenses in Townsville and Thursday Island to present-day efforts in wider North Queensland. Stretching from Rockhampton in the south to the Torres Strait in the north and all the way to the border of the Northern Territory in the west, the museum is dedicated to Army units operating in an enormous geographical area.

Enter the heritage Jezzine Barracks and admire its restored architecture. Australian military units have operated on this site for over 120 years. There are three galleries located within the barracks. Check out Gallery One to learn about North Queensland’s early colonial military and its efforts in the Boer War. See a colonial officer’s tent and read about the stories of the Shearer’s Strike.

Visit Gallery Two to discover North Queensland’s role in World Wars I and II. Read the names on the Honour Board and find out the personal accounts of North Queensland soldiers in conflict. Browse interactive displays and learn about the effects of war on the Townsville region.

More recent conflicts are the feature of Gallery Three. Find out about the wars in Vietnam and Korea, as well as the fascinating history of North Queensland’s contemporary military leaders. The display on Sir John Lavarack and the Lavarack Barracks are a highlight. For a deeper insight into the three galleries, ask about a guided tour. Save some time to explore the barracks and stroll around the lawns dotted with restored cannons.

The Army Museum North Queensland is situated within the Jezzine Barracks in Townsville’s North Ward. It is a 10-minute drive from central Townsville and parking is available on site. The museum is open on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays until lunchtime. Admission is free however, donations are appreciated. The museum is closed during the Christmas holidays and Good Friday. This attraction is wheelchair accessible.

The view was brilliant. Lovely big balcony. The pillows were hard and lumpy. 2 spare blankets would have been more comfortable. Unit was I felt poorly stocked with only one very large frying pan. No salt and one very small soap. There was aliquid soap but for 2 adults staying 5 nights it was not enough. Otherwise a greatspot to stay. Thank you.

The hostel is great compared to many. We stayed in a private room, as two couples. We were woken at 6am every morning by staff blasting music at the connecting koala sanctuary. We complained the first day to staff and the very same thing happened the next day, we were offered breakfast and drink vouchers which was appreciated, however a 6am wake up call on the weekend by staff really was a major disappointment. The room had a problem with ants, and there was a big gap at the top of our door which let in lots of insects. A few touch ups and the room itself would’ve been great. The food and drinks were great. And a great location.
