The location is excellent, in the heart of the theater district and so many dining choices. The room was not clean. So dusty. Disappointed. The staff was very kind and friendly, greeting you at every turn.

The rooms are very tiny (as advertised), but it's such a pleasant vibe. I love that they are making a big effort to reduce waste, with biodegradable toothbrushes and no mini-bottles of product. And the staff couldn't have been nicer.

Super clean and well-appointed. Small rooms, but has everything you’d want or need. Price was reasonable for the area, and location was excellent—a few blocks away from the crowds and bustle of Times Square, so quiet enough to rest up before or after a day out in the city.

The position of the hotel was spot on. Short walks to all the main tourist places and subways for those further away. Great bars and restaurant. Room had limited space to hang clothes and would recommend them butting some hooks up on the walls. A tight squeeze past the bottom of the bed to get to the other side in the room we had.

We loved our stay here. The room was quite cozy but there were a lot of options to work with the small space! The view from our room was lovely as well. We also enjoyed the location, it’s close by to the subway and Times Square, but tucked away enough that it wasn’t loud in the evening. The only thing that could be changed is to add a shower curtain or glass window for the shower, as it is quite difficult for water not to get everywhere (even when you’re careful)! The good news was the ventilation system dries it up quite quickly, and it wasn’t an issue to ask for more towels from the front desk when we needed them. We really enjoyed our time here and we look forward to coming back!! :)

Great hotel that is a short walk from Times Square. If you are in NYC to see shows, this is the perfect location. If you don't like crowds, might not be for you. But the hotel and its staff are excellent. Nice rooms, very polite and helpful staff. Cocktail room has a happy hour and later a jazz band that is also excellent. Never got to the rooftop bar as the weather was not great.

Absolutely loved this hotel. My daughter and I stayed 3 nights in a cosy twin and it was perfect for us. Great style, great staff, great music playing in the public areas and the rooms were always beautifully made up on our return each day. Convenient location. Carnegie Diner on 8th an easy walk for a morning coffee too. Would definitely book again.

The Civilian is fine, extremely small rooms but that’s to be expected sometimes in NY. Thankfully the reception is staffed otherwise the checkin kiosks are not great and offer you everything except what you want to do. The breakfast buffet may be the worst $30 per person spread I’ve ever witnessed. An unwelcoming silent staff person standing in front of an empty counter that makes the Holiday Inn free breakfast look like fine dining. A waste of money and a horrible way to start your day. House cleaning is interesting, I don’t mind paying $15 more for cleaning when needed but the basic service they offer for free essentially consists of someone walking past the room without entering. At least as far as I could tell, I saw them in the hallway but no cleaning was done. I assume I was supposed to call even for the basic service which doesn’t include making the bed. Strange. I’d recommend downloading the app and using that to manage your stay, that’s The Civilians idea of customer service, but a bot was probably better than what I received. Thankfully the front desk people were very nice, but if you want traditional hotel services this ain’t the place.

The hotel and its rooftop bar were both very nice. Conveniently located just blocks from a lot of the Broadway theaters and a plethora of other attractions in Manhattan. The staff were all courteous and helpful (turned us onto a nice, relatively out of the way place for some good pizza). The one somewhat annoying complaint was the shower design; due to the lack of a door, or even a complete wall, a not insubstantial amount of water ended up spraying out into the rest of the bathroom.

Our room was small but stylish, well laid-out and comfortable. with incredible views. The location was perfect - a half-block from all the hustle and bustle, with easy access to Times Square and within walking distance to Rockefeller Center and Central Park. Quirky city hotel in a great location. BUT BEWARE - There is a night club / bar on floor 27, we stayed on floor 19 and base thumped through our room so loudly it was impossible to sleep. The hotel declined to do anything about this so we were kept up until 2am till the nightclub closed. This happens every Fri/Sat so beware, they said the first night was a one off event and the bar would close at Midnight the next day, it did not and we were again kept up till 2am. This was not ideal on a day we were leaving early for the airport. In the end they refunded a day of our stay, however there was no apology and the attitude was just well the bar does what it does and the hotel guests should just live with it. Funnily enough the event at the bar was invitation only so hotel guests wouldnt be welcome to attend only to have their sleep disrupted. One lift was closed off for the nightclub guests with a thug of a bouncer questioning everyone! If your happy to be out and about every day till 2am hotel is fine, if not then stay elsewhere.

The location was great. The staff very friendly. The jazz at the bar was fabulous. The decor was very cool. Our two complaints which made our review a 3 star: We were on the 24th floor. On the 27th floor is the roof top bar - basically a night club. The music was VERY loud until 2 in the morning which we could feel three floors down. Other guests commented they went up to check out the club and couldn't hear themselves think let alone talk. I am not sure why the music has to be that loud. I can't imagine what it was like for the floor just beneath the club if we could feel it three stories down! And second complaint: there is an automatic light in a cubby under the bed which is supposed to be motion sensitive. However, it kept going on all night even without motion. Eventually we stuffed the cubby with pillows so it wouldn't wake us up. If you book a room on one of the lower floors I would say it is a cool hotel with great staff. If you are anywhere near the top floors beware....And cover up that light!

Walking distance to Time Square and Broadway shows. Excellent staff service and attention to detail. The hotel will message you before checking in to get arrival time to ease the check in process through their app. They message you daily with on site events for entertainment. Check out was quick and easy. I left an item behind and they sent me a message asking if I would like it shipped to me. I have not received service this detailed from most 5 star hotels. I would definitely recommend to visit.

The staff was friendly and helpful, location was good. Room was TINY, cozy is an understatement! We were only there for one night, so the size was bearable but not for more than that.
