The staff was lovely and the room quite comfortable, by Western standards for a Japanese room (although the futons were by far the hardest and most uncomfortable of the three ryokans we visited). Visiting Yoshino Mountain to see sakura, we came to this temple for ascetic monks practicing Shugendo. (Saito goma ritual) This branch of Buddhism is restricted to women. This ceremony, however, was almost all women! Usually, the ascetics walk over the hot coals remaining after the fire. We left before that happened.
