Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Tenkawa?
The best area to stay in Tenkawa is the village centre, particularly near Tenkawa-Kawaii, which offers the most convenient access to local attractions and amenities.

This area is the heart of Tenkawa, located amongst the mountains. It's where you'll find most of the traditional inns (ryokans), local eateries, and craft shops. The village is compact and walkable, with the main street leading directly to the famous Tenkawa Daibenzaiten-sha Shrine, a significant landmark.

Couples looking for a relaxing retreat will find the village centre ideal. Staying here means easy access to the Tenkawa-Kawaii Onsen, where you can enjoy the natural hot springs. Many ryokans offer private baths, enhancing the quiet and intimate experience. The proximity to walking trails and the tranquil river also makes it superb for those seeking a peaceful escape together.

For solo travellers, the village centre provides a welcoming base. It's easy to navigate, and the local shops and cafes offer opportunities to interact with the friendly community. The area is also a good starting point for exploring the surrounding nature, such as the Mitarai Valley, which is known for its clear waters and autumn leaves.
When is the best time to go to Tenkawa?
The best time to go to Tenkawa is during autumn or spring when the natural scenery is at its most beautiful.

Autumn, from late October to late November, is particularly popular for its stunning maple foliage. The mountainsides around Tenkawa turn vibrant shades of red, orange, and gold, making it an ideal time for scenic walks and photography. The air is crisp and comfortable for outdoor activities.

Spring, from late March to early May, offers pleasant weather and the beauty of cherry blossoms in the surrounding areas, though Tenkawa itself is more known for its autumn colours. It's a good time for hiking and enjoying the fresh mountain air before the summer heat arrives.

Travellers looking for a tranquil escape and breathtaking natural beauty will find either of these seasons perfect.
