Roam through vast swaths of countryside and explore gardens bursting with colour at this stunning, all-ages heritage attraction on the banks of the River Fal.

Spend hours strolling along the trails that wind through Trelissick Gardens. An 18th-century villa lies in the center of 300 acres (120 hectares) of land that offers walking routes, family adventures and gardens that bloom with exotic flora. Take as much time as you need to explore the house, art gallery and surrounding countryside for a family-friendly day out in Cornwall.

Although the gardens as they stand today were designed in the 1930s, some of the plants around the main lawn date back to the late 19th century. Look for elements added by subsequent owners, including an orchard from the 1990s and a modern mussel farm.

Breathe in the scents of dozens of different plant varieties. Amble along the Celtic cross paths to see Asiatic plants such as rhododendrons and magnolias. Head into The Dell to enjoy beds of camellias and clumps of bamboo.

The garden then splays out into a vast parkland with walking trails that follow the edge of the River Fal. Follow one trail north of the house to find a promontory fort and an 18th-century quay. Bring your pets on woodland walks and look in the trees for squirrels and birds.

Visit one of the changing exhibitions at Trelissick House, a partially furnished villa that was built in the 1750s. Learn about the history of the building or find out about the families that lived here.

Take a break from exploring in the on-site café. Elsewhere in the gardens, find a second-hand bookshop and a small art gallery, which offer indoor activities for rainy days.

Trelissick Gardens are located on a peninsula in the River Fal estuary, to the south of Truro. Buses from Truro pass by the gardens, while parking is available for people driving to the attraction. Come at any time of year to explore the house and surrounding parkland, but visit in spring or summer to see the gardens in full bloom.
