Lantern House - Historic Coastal Retreat with Hot tub, Sea Views & Garden

  • Lantern House: Historic Coastal Retreat with Sea Views

    Torquay, English Riviera

Step into the remarkable history of The Lantern House, a Grade II listed Victorian coastal retreat with links to renowned engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Set in an elevated position on Torquay’s Teignmouth Road, the house enjoys panoramic sea views across the English Riviera, surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens, mature greenery, and a uniquely peaceful setting that feels hidden away from the bustle below. Inside, original Victorian character has been carefully preserved, with elegant period details blending effortlessly with contemporary comfort. Guests can unwind in the new hot tub, gather in the spacious living areas, and enjoy easy access to Watcombe Beach, Labrador Bay, and the South West Coast Path — creating a memorable coastal escape defined as much by atmosphere and heritage as by location.

    PROPERTY DETAILS

Dating back to the 1840s and once associated with the renowned engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, The Lantern House is full of historic charm. Original sash windows, shutters, fireplaces, and flagstone flooring have been thoughtfully preserved throughout the property, blending heritage with contemporary living. The home offers flexible accommodation with three bedrooms. We are also pet friendly and have a secure garden, welcoming a maximum of two dogs, excluding illegal or aggressive breeds.

    THE SPACE

At the heart of the home is a bright open-plan living area with French doors leading onto a spacious sun terrace with sweeping coastal views. The stylish kitchen and breakfast bar create a sociable space for cooking and dining together, while the generous interiors provide over 1,600 sq ft of comfortable living space. The property also features two staircases: a striking main staircase positioned at the centre of the house, alongside a secondary spiral staircase serving as a back staircase — please refer to the floor plan for further detail. Outside, guests can enjoy beautifully landscaped gardens with lawned areas, a summerhouse, and peaceful wooded surroundings perfect for relaxing or entertaining.

    GUEST ACCESS

Guests have access to the entire property, including the landscaped gardens, terrace, summerhouse, and private off-road parking for multiple vehicles.

    INTERACTION

We like to give guests space to enjoy their stay, but we are always available should you need assistance or local recommendations during your visit.

    STAYING RULES

Please respect the peaceful residential setting and neighbouring properties. The property is suitable for families and groups looking for a relaxing coastal stay. No parties or events permitted.

    NEIGHBOURHOOD

Guests can enjoy nearby Watcombe Beach, scenic walks along the South West Coast Path, and the dramatic coastline of Labrador Bay. Torquay’s harbour, restaurants, cafés, and local attractions are all within easy reach.
