Centred on New Zealand’s largest lake, this region is known for watersports, exceptional fishing, beautiful forested areas and the country’s first national park.

Lake Taupo is surrounded by spectacular natural attractions. Enjoy water-based activities, including fishing, boating and swimming. Stay in picturesque small towns along the massive lake or the banks of one of New Zealand’s favourite rivers.

At more than 600 square kilometres (230 square miles), Lake Taupo is New Zealand’s largest lake by surface area. Fish for brown and rainbow trout or enjoy many exciting water activities, such as jet boating and water-skiing. Kayak along the shore to see the Māori Rock Carvings celebrating the lake’s rich cultural heritage.

Tongariro National Park is New Zealand’s first national park and a place of spectacular natural beauty. The UNESCO World Heritage site features some of the best hiking tracks in the country, including the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Walk next to volcanoes and other impressive natural scenery on this famous 19.4-kilometre (12-mile) hiking trail.

Book accommodation in Taupo to stay near the banks of the enormous lake. Shop for locally made home wares, artworks and fashionable clothing in the town centre. With many excellent cafés, restaurants and pubs, Taupo is a great place to relax after exploring some of the region’s top outdoor attractions.

Stay in Turangi for some of the best fishing in the country. The small town on the banks of the Tongariro River is one of the world’s finest trout fishing locations. The town also contains the Tongariro National Trout Centre, a hatchery with viewing chambers, educational displays and many fishing events year-round.

Stop at Tongariro River to explore more than 60 rapids on a rafting trip. Whitewater rafting is available in the region year-round. Many trips are suitable for young children, making it perfect for families. The region is also known for its cycling, mountain biking and skydiving.
