It was difficult to get decent accommodation in Swindon with only a week’s notice but the Goddard Arms didn’t look too bad. First impression - it was busy in the pub downstairs so I had to wait to get checked in. This place did not have an option to pay online (unlike all other places I have stayed at). Room was very minimalistic and was so small that you couldn’t open the door to 90 degrees without hitting the bed. No wardrobe, only three hooks with hangers on the wall. Very squeaky floors, single glazed windows and the shower leaked on the bathroom floor no matter how you position the shower head. While attempted to work at the desk, mere feet from the cars and lorries thundering past on main road below, I left to find the nearest Boots to buy ear plugs.
I went for breakfast only on the first of the three mornings I was there as I’d rather not eat than eat that breakfast again. I also tried the filtered coffee, but abandoned it, deciding instead to go back to my room and brew my own (I travel with coffee and filters for desperate tones like these). The staff were friendly and tried their very best and it's much appreciated, but with the essentials being so far below par they were fighting a lost cause. There was always a parking spot for my car which was a rare positive. Room has heating. Bed was ok. Overall, my experience was bad-average.
