About this property
Adorable Cabin at Trout-Stocked Paddy Run Surrounded by GWNF and Hiking Trails
Welcome to the Dudley at Half Moon. The name reflects our grandfather who built the cabin and aptly describes the face of Half Moon Mountain seen from the property. View our companion cabin the Chester at Half Moon (an adjoining tract) or utilize both for two family vacations!
This updated two story modest cabin is perfect for your getaway! The cabin features an open floor plan and is perfect for a couple's romantic weekend, a group of friends, or for family gatherings! The 58 acre grounds offer you plenty of space to unplug and enjoy a cabin version of "glamping".
Our Vision:
Stop at Strasburg Food Lion or Woodbine Farm Market for groceries on the way in and cook nice dinners in a fully equipped kitchen. We provide spices and some condiments so you don't have to. Enjoy dinner on the covered front porch. Make homemade pasta with the pasta maker. Or unwind with a glass of wine (a complimentary bottle is provided) in the outdoor Pavilion.
The next morning, relax with french press coffee or expresso (we provide!) on the front porch at sun up and watch the deer graze after a sound night of sleep in our comfortable and luxurious beds. You'll never get a better night's sleep. Or walk the property as the sun is coming up - it truly is stunning.
Put dinner in the crockpot and spend the day at a local winery or enjoy nearby hiking (you can throw a rock to the GWNF). Vance's Cove is a short walk away. Paddy Gap (a stocked trout stream - please check the VDWR website) runs through the property - bring fish home for dinner on the grill. Visit Shenandoah National Park or the Archery Camp not far away.
After dinner, lie around in the evening in our fully reclining seating to watch movies or play games on the card table. Cable TV allows access to a full selection of channels and to keep up with the world - although you won't want to. A pool/ping pong table provides hours of fun for the competitive. Or settle in with a good read from our stocked book case.
Walk the paths for a gorgeous view of Half Moon; first thing in the morning with fog rolling off the fields (coffee in hand) is the MOST spectacular.
Nature and wildlife are all around. Listen to the whippoorwills call at night, or view the brightly lit stars. Eagles, hawks and bluebirds to name a few. Fishers (a mustelid mammal) and turkeys add to the list of wildlife not seen in the city!
The water sometimes (rarely) has a sulfuric smell and although treated, we personally prefer not to drink for coffee, drinking, etc.... Please be prepared to bring water and paper products you will need- we do share what we have but only in base amounts. Alternately, feel free to leave yours behind.
Please know we are a family who enjoys sharing our property with you and ask you return the property to us in the same condition as it was provided. We ask you remove your own garbage. Because this ask has not always been respected, we do ask for a trash removal fee if you do not. We also ask please do not invite guests or bring pets if not included in the reservation. Due to the remote location, we do have security on the exterior of the home to monitor the driveways
The property is gorgeous and quiet so allow the stresses of the city to fall away. You will hate to leave and want to return soon - just 1 hour from Northern Virginia!

We wanted to gwt away and this location gave us just that. A nice place on amazing property. If your looking for tourist attractions you will drive a bit but we loved the seclusion and wqlking on the property and the attached park
It was a real nice place, very quiet! Host was very quick to respond to the messages. Place was very nice and clean. I would definitely stay here again.
Had a wonderful time on our short stay. Got some good walks in, saw a bunch of turkeys and enjoyed the solitude. Enjoyed a nice drive to Wardensville then up Winchester. Also had a fun dinner in Strasburg at the Old Dominion Doggery and Burger Shoppe.
Highly recommend the cabin.
We came down for the weekend for our anniversary. Rainy weekend, but such a nice and relaxing time. The kitchen was incredibly well-stocked! We will probably be back. Thank you for opening your property to us.
This our second year staying at Half Moon and we cant wait until next year. So quiet, roomy, spacious and peaceful. Next time we will bring our pups ❤️ We actually extended our stay an extra day because we did not want to leave!
We stayed at the cabin for a few days over New Year‘s to enjoy the peace and quietness of the remote area, away from fireworks, because our dog is afraid of them. It’s a great place to go with your furry friend. It has a spacious outdoor area, and there are some hiking paths close by. Overall it was a very comfortable cabin for a peaceful getaway.
Very cute house with plenty of space for family to gather together comfortably. My kids really loved the downstairs with the bunk bed area, pool table, full bath & very comfy couches. There's a river on property and access to national forrest. The walks were amazing!
This is our fourth stay here and we love it! The seclusion, peaceful hikes, fun pool table, comfy beds and all around great place❤️❤️ We went into town of Strasburg to Dominion Doggery and had the best burgers ever! Neighbor Martha also makes the best brownies ever! It’s so peaceful and quiet and our favorite thing is to sit on the covered porch and just watch the nature 🌸🌸🌸🐦⬛🐦⬛🦌🦌🦌
This is three fifth time we’ve stayed here. It’s a gorgeous secluded area, so quiet and peaceful with no one around. Walk out the front door for hours on end of hiking. Great beds, great tv, fun pool table and three best porch! Will continue to return! Pet friendly too!
My brothers and I all struggle to keep in touch as adults and booked a weekend trip at the midpoint between all our homes. We loved this place! It was so cute and surrounded by beautiful nature. Close by to lots of hikes and creeks and the Shenandoah valley. Our dog had a blast too!
I have been in the area all of my life and never knew anything about this spot. My husband and I celebrated our anniversary here. It was great for isolation (we saw 1 car pass the house all weekend). It was just what we wanted. The house was great, the land was beautiful. I can’t express how quiet and relaxing this home is. Our 2 girls loved it too. They especially like the stream and trying to catch trout! And it’s pet friendly! Can’t wait to come back !
The cabin was very nice! It has been updated a bit since the photos that are on the listing. Nice quiet area. We walked to the creek/NF to fish - it's about .5 mile from the cabin, easy walk. The kitchen was stocked with lots of condiments, all the pots/pans/bowls/utensils that you would need. Wifi worked great. Would stay here again!
This is the first time I have ever seen Virginia so I booked this VRBO near all the things we wanted to do. Our stay was fantastic! Check in and check out was easy! We were able to communicate with the host who was so nice and very helpful! The house was clean, comfortable, and we didn’t want to leave at the end of our stay! I can’t say enough about the property and how peaceful it was. Our two German shepherds had the best time exploring and running through the creek with us! We enjoyed a cup of hot tea on the deck with our dogs every night. Can’t wait to come back. If you’re reading this book the cabin!
House was fantastic. Open living room looked out over expansive property and beyond.
Deer and turkeys abound. Great trails into GWNF. Bedrooms very comfortable. kitchen well appointed and if you just want to stay here and cook and grill it’s just like home. If you want a place to lose the rest of the world for mental decompression look no further Second visit to these cottages.
Our family enjoyed the cabin and property very much. The kids loved the downstairs bunk beds and hang out area I enjoyed the walks in the woods every morning . The back roads were so pretty with the leaves. It was a nice slow down . We will return for a longer stay next time . Thank you for the humbling memories we were able to make.
From start to finish; directions to property were spot on, simple check-in/out, cabin provided the comforts of home and more. We were surrounded by the National Forest, yet enjoyed the sunrise each morning. The hummingbirds visited regularly. Songbirds were ever present. This experience exceeded our expectations and offered the rest and relaxation we were seeking. Highly recommend this property. Thank you!
