Take time out in a pretty church, watch fishermen unload their catch, explore ancient fortifications or simply enjoy a relaxing stroll around this charming port.

Sitting snugly under a shelf of limestone cliffs beneath the old town of Sorrento, the pretty Marina Grande is brimming with rustic charm. The smaller of Sorrento’s two main harbours, this traditional fishing port is known for its laid-back atmosphere and unique marine heritage.

As you wander around the harbour, you would be forgiven for thinking you had stepped back in time. The marina was once surrounded by an imposing stone wall, which acted as a buffer between the city and those who approached by sea. Unfortunately, Turkish pirates breeched this fortification and plundered the city in 1558. Although most of the ancient wall is long gone, the Greek Gate and the Bastion of Parsano still remain, giving visitors a precious and tangible snapshot of Sorrento history.

Sheltered from the chaos of the streets above, the Marina Grande is the perfect place to take time out from the main tourist haunts of Sorrento. Grab an ice cream and stroll along the waterfront to enjoy the sights of the fishing boats as they gently bob up and down. From here, head to the harbour’s small beach and take a dip in the deep, azure sea before settling in one of the waterfront restaurants for a bite to eat.

Suitably refreshed, make your way into the lovely little Church of Saint Anna for some quiet contemplation. If you are visiting near the end of July, you are in for a real treat as the sleepy marina is transformed by fireworks and processions as the locals celebrate this revered local saint.

As the sun goes down, the quayside comes alive. Pick your way through the heaps of nets and enjoy the unique sight of local fishermen as they clean and mend nets, and tend to their boats. Visitors who are lucky enough to be here at sunset will also be rewarded with stunning views of the beautiful Bay of Naples so ensure you have your camera to hand as this is one sight you will not want to miss.
