Try freshly baked bread, listen to Gregorian chants during a service and admire walls of frescoes in this early 20th-century monastery.

Among the modern skyscrapers of central São Paulo is the São Bento Monastery, a beautiful Catholic site built in a 17th-century style. Gregorian chants echo through the colourful interior of the main hall during Mass and a theatre hosts regular musical performances. Explore the monastery’s facilities to find the residences of Benedictine monks and a shop where you can buy home-made bread and jams. This is one of the most important religious sites in the country.

The church you see today was constructed in 1922, although the original chapel on the site was designed in the 17th century. Today’s structure has some features similar to cathedrals from the 1600s. Look up at the stately design of the two towers above the monastery’s entrance to see a gold clock face on the façade. Stay around to hear the bells chime every 15 minutes.

The interior of the São Bento Monastery is covered in frescoes and detailed sculptures. The murals were painted by a travelling Benedictine monk from Germany. Admire some of his most renowned work on the walls of the monastery, including paintings of angels and biblical scenes.

Visit during a Mass to hear the 6,000-pipe organ resounding against the walls and high ceilings of the structure. Gregorian chants are also a common feature of Sunday Mass. Listen to the haunting medieval music, which is based on a tonality unfamiliar to modern ears. Sunday Mass is very popular among São Paulo residents and visitors. Arrive early to ensure that you and your family can find seats. Otherwise, attend one of the monastery’s regular concerts, which are open to the public and free to watch.

Try a home-made treat at the monastery store. The monks that live at São Bento Monastery prepare cake, jam and bread, which are all for sale. One of the tastiest offerings is a pão de mel, a jam-filled and chocolate-dipped honey bread.

São Bento Monastery is situated in downtown São Paulo. It is accessible by metro and bus. If you are driving, park in metered spots along the street. The monastery is open daily. Entry is free.
