The best area to stay in Santurde is the area around the Plaza Mayor and the historic Old Town.

This central district is the heart of Santurde, characterised by its traditional Basque architecture, narrow pedestrian streets, and a relaxed pace of life. The Plaza Mayor itself is a beautiful open square, often bustling with locals, and surrounded by cafes and small shops. You'll find many of the town's key landmarks, such as the Church of San Jorge, just a short walk from here.

Couples looking for a tranquil and authentic experience will find the Old Town particularly appealing. It offers a chance to enjoy leisurely strolls, discover local eateries serving traditional Basque cuisine, and simply soak in the local culture without the distractions of a larger city.

The best time to go to Santurde is during the late spring (May to June) and early autumn (September to October) when the weather is pleasant for outdoor activities and exploring the region.

Late spring offers comfortable temperatures, typically ranging from 15°C to 22°C, with increasing sunshine. This period is ideal for enjoying the natural beauty of the Basque Country, such as hiking in the nearby Sierra de Cantabria mountains or visiting local vineyards. The countryside is lush, and the towns are not yet at their peak tourist season, providing a more relaxed experience. Couples looking for a romantic getaway will appreciate the mild weather for leisurely walks and al fresco dining.

Early autumn also provides excellent conditions, with temperatures usually between 18°C and 25°C. The grape harvest season is often underway in September, offering unique opportunities to experience local culture and wine production. This is a great time for travellers interested in culinary experiences, as local produce is abundant and many food festivals occur.
