San Antonio springs consist of five springs that capture natural spring water cascading down the mountain. The pools are progressively cooler as you go down, and they are worth the hike down a 6-mile dirt road when the Forest Service locks the main gates, which is almost always.
Monastery Lake, part of the adjacent originally Trappist abbey, is now voluntarily leased to the New Mexico Game & Fish Department by the current Benedictine order. Regularly stocked with trout, this lovely pond is also beautiful to walk around on the dirt trail that rings it.
Monastery Lake resides next door to the Benedictine Monastery near Pecos, New Mexico. Used by local fishermen and fed by water diverted from the Pecos River, the lake sports a trail that hugs the perimeter for a lovely shaded walk.
This river crossing apparatus has been out of commission for many years, but its location along the Rio Chama is a lovely spot for viewing a variety of sandstone formations along Chama Canyon.
