"We had a brief single night stop over at Hotel Dolorea. Booked through Expedia, which seemed to cause some confusion for the staff upon arrival but after some investigation by the staff our booking was found. We booked a shared room for a family of four. Room was air conditioned which was a welcome relieve from the near 40C outside. Room was spacious with a very generous sized bathroom, beds were comfy and water was in the mini fridge. There was no kettle in the room. Room/hotel were...

"This is a roadside hotel attached to a restaurant with some nice areas to sit and relax. The owner and staff were super friendly, and the rooms were nice and clean. There was no air conditioning, but they provided two fans that did the job. We spent most of our time visiting Pamplona and Vitoria, so we mainly used the hotel as a place to sleep. Overall, we had a very good experience at Aritzalko. Recommended!"

Hotel Iriarte Jauregia

10/10 Excellent

"The staff were incredible, they made my toddler feel like she was at home. Accommodated us at every turn with out us asking. We would return to this amazing place again and again!"

Andamur San Roman

8/10 Good

"Stayed here while walking the Camino Ignaciano. Surprisingly clean, comfortable room for a highway trucker hotel, not too noisy, convenient restaurant downstairs, would recommend. Official Camino route (San Roman de San Milan) only 1 km away. Only regret was no bathtub, only shower but very good and reasonable price."

Hotel Zerupe

10/10 Excellent

"We had an incredible stay at Hotel Zerupe! All of the front desk staff were so friendly and had great recommendations for the area. The location cannot be beat- you can easily walk to restaurants, gelato, shops, and the beach! The hotel was very clean, and the air conditioning worked great. The hotel is in the pedestrian only area of the city, so you will need to walk about a block from where a car might drop you off to get to the hotel. I highly recommend this hotel, and I hope I get the chance to stay here again one day!"

There was no kettle in the room. Room/hotel were accessed using a key code which worked well when returning from an evening meal. A bonus is the private parking in the hotels subterranean car park for 10 euros a night. All in all a good experience, staff were friendly and helpful. Beasain is a delightful town for an evening stroll with some interesting historical features."

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in San Martín?

The best area to stay in San Martín is the area immediately surrounding the town's historic centre, particularly around Mayor Street (Kale Nagusia) and the Plaza Mayor.

This central area is the heart of San Martín, offering a blend of traditional Basque architecture and modern conveniences. Mayor Street is the main thoroughfare, lined with local shops, traditional taverns (pintxo bars), and restaurants, leading directly to the bustling Plaza Mayor, which often hosts local markets and events. It's a very walkable district, allowing you to easily explore the town's main attractions on foot.

Couples looking for a romantic and authentic experience will find this area particularly appealing. The charming, narrow streets, the opportunity to enjoy evening strolls to different pintxo bars, and the proximity to the town's cultural sites like the Church of San Martín de Tours make it an ideal base for a relaxed and culturally rich trip.

For travellers prioritising convenience and access to the town's culinary scene, staying in this central area is perfect. You'll be just steps away from some of the best local eateries, allowing you to sample the famous Basque cuisine without needing to venture far.

When is the best time to go to San Martín?

The best time to visit San Martín is during the spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) months.

These periods offer pleasant weather, with moderate temperatures that are ideal for exploring the region's attractions without the intense heat of summer. You'll find fewer crowds compared to the peak summer season, allowing for a more relaxed experience at popular sites and easier access to restaurants and cultural events. The natural landscapes are particularly beautiful in spring with blooming flowers or in autumn with the changing colours of the foliage.

For those looking for a lively option, the summer months (July and August) are also a good option, as the town is bustling with local festivals and outdoor activities. However, be prepared for higher temperatures and more visitors.
