Campo de Fiori Grotto Apartment
Strategically located two steps away from Palazzo Spada, between Campo de’ Fiori and Piazza Farnese, this grotto has been transformed to an open-space apartment. The apartment itself is a lovely space that has plenty of room for friends and family. There are no doors, but it didn't seem like it was cramped. The only issue is being underground, the humidity and heat became a problem. The AC unit did ok, but it was still hot. We asked for fans and had 1 delivered but 2 or more would be better to make the space comfortable in the summer. Other than the we really enjoyed the stay and the management company was good to work with

Musty but cool
The location is convenient, and because it is underground, it is cooler and quiet. but the kitchen utensils and pots/pans were crusted with food and mold, there was food left in the microwave from prior guests, and it was very damp. Clothes and towels will not dry and everything had a musty smell when we left. Our greeter was on time and friendly and helpful.
This was by far the worst place I have ever stayed in. The photos are incredibly misleading. They make the apartment appear open, bright and airy. This below-ground apartment is dark, dank, and damp, with an overpowering smell of mold. The open alcove in the photo was cluttered haphazardly with random items, such as a mattress, a mirror, a chair, and a crib, making the space unusable. Although we had two dehumidifiers in use, along with a fan and the air conditioner on, we could not get rid of the dampness or the overwhelming smell of mold and it wasn't just a smell. There was black mold along almost every wall, running along the base and climbing up. It was also found in the kitchen in the utensil drawer. The knife had actually mold spores growing on it. This was not only disgusting and foul-smelling, but a health hazard. My daughter has asthma and started to have breathing issues. Needless to say, we checked out early and found much better accommodations. This place should not be rented until these issues are rectified. It was a horrible experience.

Hot, damp, and dirty with bugs
I read reviews saying that this windowless basement was damp, but then saw others saying that dehumidifiers/AC fixed the problem. The problem is not solved. We dropped our bags early after a great check-in process with the third-party property manager. We left expecting it to be clean when we got back. It was warm and damp at noon, but we assumed that the AC/dehum's had simply been turned off and that those issues could be resolved. When we returned at 9pm, the cleaning crew had left the AC off and humidity was 89%. Surfaces throughout the property were still not clean enough for us to walk barefoot. The table still showed a film of grease and general ick. The smaller dehumidifier was taking no moisture out of the air but pumping out plenty of heat, so we turned it off. The AC produced some air movement but little cooling. The temperature never dropped below 24C, and the humidity was above 80% all night. My son found flying ants? in his bed (see image). We moved his bed to a new location, but found another bug on his bed in the new location. The place is junk-filled; we moved a 9ft ladder to move the bed. It was almost 2pm and only my other son had fallen asleep. After walking hotel to hotel and surfing the web, we couldn't find anything we could afford, so we booked for the next night and left by 7am. We got only a partial refund. The photos look like a unique adventure, but you don't want this one. Don't be fooled by the "grotto". Don't bring children here.

Musty Cellar
Before I begin, the staff at Wonder Stay did a great job helping us with transportation and problems with the apartment. Having said that, I’d like to share with you reasons why this place should not be rentable.
First, the musty smell is overwhelming. We were told that it was normal for this apartment to smell musty due to it once having being a wine cellar. The smell was too much and I decided to investigate. The room has very low light, so I used my cellphone flashlight and started noticing that there was mold on the walls and floorboards in the apartment. I messaged the host and they told us they would send someone to clean it and paint over it. We changed our schedule so they could come take care of it. The gentleman that was coming didn’t show up until after 7. We wasted time waiting, then, we couldn’t be in the apartment because of the bleach smell so we left. We normally go out from 8:00 to 2:30 and come back from sightseeing at because of the heat and go out again at 8 or 9.
We left and wandered around Rome in the heat because we couldn’t return for a few hours.
Second, the apartment wasn’t ready by check in time. The cleaning person came in and finished quickly. Lastly, on the first two days, the sheets felt as if they were wet. My husband made the connection that there was a lot of humidity in this cave like apartment. He found a machine on top of the washer that dehumidifies the room. The downside was we had to empty the water tray at least twice a day or the room felt wet and musty. The entire time we were there, i was nervous that my husband’s and daughter’s asthma would act up because of the environment in the cellar. I hope other people see this info and decide not to reserve it!
