Port Farm Couples Stay
Summary: When Port Farm first appears on the horizon you could easily mistake it for a farm shed. Perched high on a hill above the coastal village of Port Campbell, the humble corrugated iron building gives nothing away until you reach the front door. It is here that your eyes are met by expansive views of farmland and the wild Southern Ocean, and where we invite you to step inside, switch off and experience the Great Ocean Road differently.
With thoughtful touches and original artwork throughout, Port Farm stands alone in offering a remote but easily accessible base for you to explore the 12 Apostles Food Artisans Trail, undertake the Great Ocean Walk or ride the 12 Apostles Trail. Or you might decide to simply bunker down at the house, run a bath and indulge in a romantic dinner with your loved one. Either way, Port Farm is so much more than a place to stay; it is a place to reconnect, be struck by awe and wonder, and again find your sense of place in the world.
The Space: Built to weather storms, Port Farm is a thoughtfully designed off-grid home with cozy and luxurious interiors carefully curated to help you reconnect with each other and nature. Every room features large picture windows so you can take in and appreciate the drama of this rugged coastline, known the world over for its famous rock formations and shipwreck history. Birds and native wildlife can often be seen hovering, hopping and swooping right in front of the house. At night the stars shine brightly and the lights of the coastal village of Port Campbell almost feel within arm’s reach.
Every part of the farmhouse has been carefully considered from the soft flax linen on your king-sized bed to the enormous sofas that you will want to sink into with one of our many books. The bathroom has a shower and a bath with views reaching out to the horizon and there’s ample room in the kitchen to whip up a feast or enjoy local produce from The Place of Wonder or Schulz Organic Dairy. You can also book a massage and a professional photographer if you’re celebrating a special occasion.
On the north side of the house, a locally made bluestone table and barbeque make the perfect pair for long lunches and sunset dinners when the weather is calm. At the front of the house, you can laze in the stone chaise recliners or by the fire pit; both providing the perfect vantage point to take in the expansive views of the Southern Ocean and the rolling hills of the hinterland. Apart from the deep outdoor bath at the eastern end of the house, there might not be a better spot on this coastline to enjoy a morning cuppa or sunset tipple.
No matter how you spend your time here, Port Farm provides an unforgettable and truly unique rural escape perfect for romantic weekend getaways, anniversaries and proposals.
Guest Access: This listing is for two people sharing one bed and using one bedroom. If you would like to book Port Farm for a group, please see our other listing or send us a message.
While not imaginative, this 170-acre farm became known to us as Port Farm (a working title if you like) and the house you now see which we finished building in 2024, is the only one on the property.
You will have access to one bedroom and one bathroom during your stay, including the shed at the end of the house which has additional furniture, wood and games. There is a locked cupboard in the shed where we keep our personal belongings that we kindly ask you not to access.
Port Farm is a safe harbour. Being an inclusive stay is very important to us and while our unique location might not suit every traveler, we hope those who decide to venture up our bumpy farm track will feel the same way. If you have any questions about this or require measurements or videos of any of our spaces, please let us know because we are here to make sure you have the best stay possible.
The Neighborhood: The iconic 12 Apostles coastline needs no introduction. The national Park is full of natural attractions all within a short drive from Port Farm (see below), but there are many other treasures to be found for those who explore a little longer and we love sharing these ‘hidden gems’ with you.
The coastal village of Port Campbell is the closest town (3 kilometres) to the farm, and it has the most beautiful bay with the only beach you can swim at in the area. Although a small town, there are cafes, restaurants and a pub dotted along the main street and plenty of places to get supplies to cook your own meals back at the farm. If you plan to eat out, we recommend booking ahead.
Port Farm is close to many of the Great Ocean Road's famous natural attractions including: The 12 Apostles – 13 kilometres Loch Ard Gorge – 10 kilometres Gibson Steps – 14 kilometres The Grotto – 10 kilometres Bay of Islands – 19 kilometres The small towns of Timboon and Peterborough are also within 15 kilometres of Port Farm.
Getting Around: You will need a car to get to Port Farm and explore the area and public transport is very limited. Riding a bike is possible but be warned you will need a lot of pedal power as the track up to the house is gravel and steep in parts. Walking to Port Campbell is possible, however there are no footpaths along the roadsides for some of the journey.
Transport to and from the Great Ocean Walk, gourmet tours and bike hire can also be arranged through local business Ride With Us.
Other Things to Note: We'd be delighted to have you as our guests, but we want to make sure you have all the information you need for a comfortable and enjoyable stay. Please take a moment to read these very important notes before you stay:
Accessing the House: The road from the main road to the house is a bumpy gravel farm track that crosses a bridge over a creek and has one very steep section. At times, it can be wet and muddy. While most drivers can manage these conditions in an ordinary car, AWD or 4WD vehicles are better suited. Old cars or very low cars might not make it!
Farm Life: Port Farm is a working farm with livestock, dams and electric fences. We are also surrounded by other local farms. To ensure we can share the farmhouse with guests, we rely on you staying on the designated tracks and admiring our animals and visiting wildlife from a safe distance. While often lovely to look at and teeming with visiting birds, our dams are important sources of water and should not be used for swimming. Children must be always supervised.
Off-Grid Living: We are so very proud to offer a luxury stay that allows you to travel more lightly and have left some tips in our guest book. The house is completely powered by the sun, and we find if it is cloudy and everything in the house is being used, the generator will run. This isn’t a problem; it just means you will notice a whirring hum from inside the house. It also runs on a Tuesday morning just to keep in good shape!
Accessibility: Throughout the build, extra attention was given to improving the livability and accessibility of the farmhouse. Consideration has been given to many of our fixtures and fittings including lighting and switches, tapware, grab rails and the surfaces we’ve used inside and outside the house. A toilet chair, shower chair and threshold mats are also available. We are currently working with Accessible Accommodation to gain accreditation to describe in better detail the features we do and don’t have, and we are always on-hand to provide any measurements or videos you might need to help you decide if Port Farm is suitable for you.
Flooding and Fire Danger: Very rarely, Campbell Creek rises quickly causing flooding in our lower paddocks and over our access track. We will contact you if we think you need to leave the farm quickly or are not able to get in. We suggest downloading the VicEmergency App and on days declared catastrophic fire days, you will have the choice to cancel or change your booking.
Children: We welcome families, however given the delicate nature of our fabrics and artworks, and fires, electric fences and dams, you might find your stay at Port Farm more relaxing with older children or babies not yet on the move. Either way, children must always be supervised. We have a port-a-cot available if you need it and there’s also a sandpit near the water tank for busy kids who love to play outside in rain, hail or shine. We know them well!
Wi-Fi and Mobile Network: It is quite common for the mobile network to be slow and at times, drop out completely. This is part of rural life! While you will have access to our Starlink service, please ensure you have a print-out or screenshot of the information you need to check-in before you arrive.
Heating and cooling: The weather here can be wild and it is likely you will experience more than one season during your stay. The farmhouse was built with this in mind and it is very well insulated with uPVC windows and doors, sunscreen blinds and curtains. Should you need it, there is a split system in the kitchen and living area. There is also a wood burning fireplace in the living area and during the cooler months when the fire danger season is over, the outside firepit can be lit. When it is warmer, the windows can be opened to allow the breeze to flow through and there are ceiling fans in each bedroom in case it is too windy to open the windows.
Travel Insurance & cancellation policy: We recommend securing travel insurance to safeguard against any unforeseen travel disruptions as the cancellation policy you agreed to when booking is firm.
