Paripueira Beach is a glorious stretch of sand with natural pools and shallow water. It is the site of one of the world’s largest networks of coral reefs. Walk a fair distance into the ocean with the water barely covering your knees.

Relish the calm waves of the water, which make the beach ideal for families. This long stretch of sand is among the most popular beaches for vacationers with one of the highest concentrations of coral reef in the Atlantic.

Cool down in the clear water after sunbathing under the scorching sun. Go snorkeling in the ocean and spot the colorful fish below the surface. The shallow bay has around 20 natural pools where you will find all manner of fish, coral and other marine treasures. Ride out to the pools at low tide with a guide to learn about the local ecosystems.

Enjoy seafood, such as lobster and shrimp, from one of the restaurants and bars on the beach, which is among the most urban in the region. Watch beach performers and peruse the shopping centers for bargains and souvenirs. The area’s economy is mostly driven by fishing. Notice the local fishermen waiting patiently for their catch.

Hear the history of the region, which was initially settled by the Tupi people from the Amazon before they were enslaved by Portuguese colonizers. Note that the name of the beach and the commune comes from the Tupi language, meaning either Calm Water or Old Channel.

Paripueira Beach overlooks the Atlantic Ocean on Brazil’s northeastern coast. It is 19 miles (30 kilometers) north of Maceió and 160 miles (260 kilometers) south of Recife. The northern part of the beach is the quieter and more secluded part. Stay at one of the nearby posadas and hotels in this fairly built-up area. Visit the nearby Manatee Marine Preservation Municipal Park.
