Sweetwood | Private Log Cabin with Hot Tub + Majestic Mountain Views!
Sweetwood overlooks the majestic Blue Ridge Mountain Range. Enjoy the ever-changing mountain view by day and marvel at the brilliant stars against the inky black sky at night. Mount Mitchell, the tallest peak east of the Mississippi River, is directly in view. The property is located in Gateway Mountain, a 3,000-acre hardwood forest and preserve, which offers a peaceful respite from hectic day-to-day life.
In addition to the varied and breathtaking vistas, guests within Gateway enjoy unspoiled, woodland surroundings and amenities including hiking trails, a private lake in which you can swim if you'd like, a spectacular and private waterfall park and picnic area, and even a small catch and release trout pond (no license required). We find that time spent on the mountain is always uplifting and restorative, and we would love for Sweetwood to be the home base for your getaway.
Note: As of May 2026, Lake George is closed until further notice and off limits to boating, swimming, fishing, and pet use.
House Layout: MAIN FLOOR- Open living room and dining area, artfully appointed, with sliders opening onto the spacious upper deck. The living room has a 70" TV (DISH) and a fireplace with gas logs. There is a bedroom with a queen bed across from the full hall bath with a jacuzzi tub and hand-held shower. A fully equipped kitchen makes the preparation of anything from a simple snack to a large holiday feast a pleasure for the cook(s) in your group. The primary suite has a King bed and opens onto the screen porch (which is also accessible from the upper deck), and a full bath features a multi-jet shower. A laundry/mud room with a washer/dryer is also on this level.
LOWER LEVEL- Den with a sectional couch, 50-inch TV (with DISH + DVD player), game table seating 4-6, and a collection of board games, playing cards, puzzles, and books. An electric Franklin Stove provides both extra warmth and charm to the space. Sliders open onto the lower-level deck, and a bedroom with a queen bed has a full hall bath (shower only, no tub). The library contains books, travel brochures, local reference materials, and a wireless printer for guest use. A "mini gym" with a spin bike, exercise bands, and free weights is available for use as well.
OUTDOORS- Gas grill off the kitchen door, bistro seating for two on the front porch, two large mountain-facing decks, and a screen porch. The upper deck has a dining table with seating for six adjacent to the wood-burning chimney. The lower deck is furnished with four Adirondack chairs and another bistro set seating two. The screen porch is outfitted to seat four, but can easily accommodate six with extra folding chairs.
Sweetwood is a true mountain retreat, yet its proximity to the community gate (just 1 mile) on a gently sloping, paved street provides easy access to main roads. It's a comfortable and often very scenic drive to a great variety of active outdoor pursuits, charming mountain towns, small artisanal farms and markets, artist studios/galleries, restaurants, breweries, and historical sights.

3 siblings and spouses from 3 different states met here to catch up and hang out in this secluded lovely spot. Beautiful property with many activities and restaurants nearby - 20-30 min.
We were pleasantly surprised when we walked through the front door! What a beautiful home with a breathtaking view of the mountains! We did some cooking and found the kitchen supplies perfect! The fireplace was perfect for cool evenings. Thoroughly enjoyed the artwork throughout the home too! Beautiful and well appointed home! Would love to visit again!
Wow, this home is amazing! My husband and I took both sets of parents here for a long Thanksgiving weekend, and it couldn’t have been more perfect! The view is incredible and the home was well appointed and very cozy. Lots of seating for lazy days of conversation, board games and watching football. Kitchen had every amenity we could have wanted to prepare Thanksgiving dinner, and rooms and beds were very comfy. It was an absolutely perfect weekend, one that we will reminisce on for a long, long time!!
This is a beautiful property. Well stocked, clean, and everything you could want for a weekend in the woods. We had a wonderful stay and hope to return!
The cabin was amazing! Super clean, great views & such a pleasant escape away in the mountains yet close enough to everything you need a short drive away! We loved it!
We loved our stay here. Beautiful, roomy home with beautiful views. Very clean and easy to understand instructions for checking in/out. Absolutely loved it!!
Sweetwood Lodge - Perfect Escape of the Summer Heat!
Sweetwood Lodge was everything that was advertised on the VRBO website and more. The views of the mountains and clouds, as well as the starry nights, from the living room was the most peaceful and relaxing experience. The neighborhood is quiet and private. We enjoyed our stay there very much and plan to return next summer!
We had the best stay at this property. The home was amazing and the views were breath taking. The house had everything you could possibly need and it was so clean. The beds were incredibly comfortable. Smores out on the back deck were fun while overlooking the scenery. Such a peaceful vacation. We cannot wait to come back.
The home was as advertised and we loved it. I stayed with my two sisters and we had so much space. We made day trips to Asheville, Black Mountain, Chimney Rock and ended up canceling all dinner reservations to get back to our beautiful, peaceful deck with the great view.
This was our very first experience doing any kind of short term rental and we couldn’t be happier with our experience! The place was just as advertised and is perfectly designed for a large family gathering! The location and views are what really make this place special! The stars at night of the main deck were breathtaking! Greybeard Rentals really have everything down to a science! I highly recommend staying at Sweetwood Lodge for a fantastic mountain stay!!
We travel a great deal and often our travel includes VRBO. WE have stayed at many different properties, but this property is in a category by itself. It is gorgeous. The details of everything from decorating, to entertainment to a fabulously stocked kitchen lends this property to being THE property you want to rent. We loved waking up to a beautiful view of the mountains with all kinds of critters singing to you. Thank you for opening your home. It was just what our family needed.
First impression, beautiful.
Wow factor when we first walked in. However, the cleanliness was not up to par what so ever. The furniture had dust bunnies and dead bugs undernearth. The table tops and other surfaces were terribly dusty. (Photos taken). The vent cover to the microwave was lying on the floor. We tried placing it back in its proper place just to notice its taped up. The tape, ironically, was no longer sticky so we left it off. However, when cooking, on the stove top, with the microwave fan on, it just blew in our faces. If we didn't use the fan, the smell of food lingered. The biggest issue for us was the beds. We tried the master bedroom first, no go. Tried the bed near the laundry room, just as bad. My husband ended up.sleeping in our vehicle. That is unacceptable in our opinion. What were we to do at that point? So soft and clearly worn.
For that particular reason, we wouldnot return to that particular cabin. We did not get good rest like we hoped for on our vacation.
I found and earring back and long dark hair on the master bathroom floor. Neither of us have long dark hair.
The second largest issue for us was the fact that the screens to the deck as well as the screened door to the screened room are all torn. So, we were unable 2
This home served as a great getaway for our young family. The view from the back deck were outstanding, and we truly felt like we were away. The drive up and down Gateway Mountain can be a bit harrowing and rough on your brakes if you’re not used to mountain driving, but ultimately worth it if you’re looking to “unplug” in a peaceful setting. Depending on what you’re looking for, the 40 minute drive to Asheville is a bit of a hike, but not unmanageable. Finally, the property mgmt staff at Graybeard Rentals were wonderful to work with as well. We had to delay our trip about 10 days due to an illness and they went above and beyond to help us out.
This property was just as advertised, beautiful, peaceful and so cozy. The house is ideal for families or a group of adults. Enough space for everyone to gather or have private time. The outside area is beautiful as well. The home is a bit secluded in a neighborhood on top of a large hill/ mountain so it is a little remote. But that’s what makes it very special. We loved this house and would stay again.
Beautiful view of mountains, home was clean and had everything we needed, instructions for everything (into development and home) was very easy. Didn't realize how hilly the area was but we adjusted quickly. Rained a lot on visit but the home had a indoor bike and games that made for an enjoyable stay in day. Nice screened in porch - well used.
