To sample French culture at its best, take a stroll through the Old Town, situated just behind the main promenade. This medley of scorched red buildings and narrow streets is bursting with character and charm. Visitors are treated to a whole host of ancient churches, baroque buildings and fantastic fountains and monuments. For foodies, visitors can buy fresh local produce at the regularly held markets, or sample delicious local cuisine in one of the many nearby restaurants or cafés.

Situated just in front of the Old Town is Nice’s main square, Place Massena. This bohemian plaza is packed full of artistic marvels and includes the spectacular fountain which is illuminated at night. This bustling hub of activity is the main pedestrian thoroughfare in Nice and has a variety of street attractions and performances on offer.

Overlooking the Old Town to south is Castle Hill, is a lush green park with its own waterfall and castle ruins. Climb the stairs or take the lift to the top of this hill and sample the breathtaking views of the entire city. The lift runs from March through to late October and incurs a small fee.

Nice is pedestrian friendly and easily navigable on foot or by bus or tram. Visitors can also use the city’s bicycle rental scheme as an alternative means of getting about.
