The best area to stay in Nagiso is along the Nakasendo Way, particularly within the historic post towns of Tsumago-juku and Magome-juku.Tsumago-juku is an incredibly well-preserved Edo-period post town. The main street, which is pedestrianised for much of the day, is lined with traditional wooden inns (ryokans), shops, and museums, giving you a real sense of stepping back in time. You'll find many of these historic buildings along the main thoroughfare, which stretches a few hundred metres through the valley.Couples looking for a romantic and culturally rich experience will adore Tsumago-juku. Staying in a traditional ryokan, often with an onsen (hot spring bath) and kaiseki (multi-course dinner), offers an authentic Japanese experience. The quiet evenings, with the soft glow of lanterns, are superb for a relaxing escape.Magome-juku, while similar in its historic preservation, offers a slightly different layout. It's built on a steep slope, with its main street winding uphill, providing stunning views of the surrounding mountains. This post town is also full of traditional buildings and local craft shops.For travellers keen on hiking, staying in either Tsumago-juku or Magome-juku provides direct access to the scenic 8km hiking trail connecting the two towns.
