Fabulous cave hotel in Matera

A beautiful hotel built into a cave. We had a huge room with a spa bath which was an amazing way to relax and cool down after a day walking through the astonishing environs of Matera. Dinner in the hotel restaurant, sitting outside overlooking the gorge was lovely.

This was a "blow the budget" trip for me and I was not disappointed. The hotel is built into caves and has fantastic views of the city and over the ford (you can walk over). My room (a cave in itself) was huge, a large jacuzzi in the centre (would likely accommodate 4 people) and a modern wet room at rear, decor and lighting was perfect. The restaurant was also built into cave, was beautiful. Staff eager to assist and pleasant to chat to. Overall, fantastic - 1 minor criticism, the water in jacuzzi was not warm, no doubt refreshing in the sweltering summer but uninviting in a cooler October! Did mention to staff and it was being inspected when I left. Formidable place, thank you.

This property is just AMAZING! It is set in the old town, part of the Sasi. The hotel is in what was a Palace back in the 1700’s. The room we stayed in was literally a cave that had been updated and converted to a hotel room. The pictures on their site do a wonderful job showing what the rooms are like. The restaurant was excellent. Service, food, and variety. The breakfast spread was very complete and offers eggs and omelette as well which we did not find in other hotels in Apulgia. But the best part of the stay was the staff. The were so helpful. They arranged for parking outside of the old town and for the shuttle from the parking to the hotel. They also had the staff porter the bags to the hotel from the shuttle. They had many suggestions of where to go what to do and were helpful in just so many ways. Highly recommend staying there and spend a few days in Matera. The history there is very unique and interesting and the hiking and scenery are pretty darn special
