Take it easy or get active on an attractive beach that is surrounded by gorgeous cliff-top scenery waiting to be explored.
Work on your tan as you relax on the golden sands of Mataleñas Beach, one of the most picturesque stretches of sand in Santander. This small and beautiful beach extends for approximately 755 feet (230 metres) and sits in a sheltered cove between two rocky headlands.
To get to the beach walk down the long steep staircase. Before your descent pause on the cliff top to take in the views that include the Bay of Biscay and the vegetation-covered coastal cliffs.
Spread out your towel on the golden sands. During the summer the beach is a popular place so get there early in the day if you want to take your pick of the best spots. Bring food and drink with you as there aren't any bars or cafés on the beach. Splash around in the water and if you’re into surfing, bring your board with you. Although it’s not the best beach in Santander for surfing, there are good wave conditions occasionally.
The beach is located in the Parque de Mataleñas, a coastal park with woods, a golf course, a pond, a children’s play area and a sports circuit. Go for a ramble through its scenic surrounds, perfect your golf swing and save some time to enjoy its other attractions. A short walking distance away is the Cabo Mayor Lighthouse where you can browse numerous paintings in its arts centre.
Mataleñas Beach is located in Santander’s Cueto neighbourhood, approximately 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometres) north of El Sardinero Beach. Get here by walking along the scenic cliff-top route between the two beaches or take a bus or taxi. If you have a rental car, drive and use the free parking facilities. The beach has showers and toilets.
