This area is the heart of Markina, characterised by its traditional Basque architecture, narrow streets, and the presence of the Santa Maria de la Asuncion church. The main plaza, Plaza de los Fueros, is a central point for local life and offers a relaxed setting. You'll find a selection of local eateries and shops within easy walking distance.

Couples looking for a quiet and authentic Basque experience will appreciate staying here. The historic centre provides a peaceful base for exploring the town on foot, enjoying local cuisine, and experiencing the regional culture without the hustle and bustle of larger cities.

For travellers looking for convenience and a central location to explore the Basque Country, staying within Markina's town centre is an excellent choice.

The best time to go to Markina is generally during the spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) months.

During these periods, the weather is pleasantly mild, making it ideal for exploring the natural beauty of the Basque Country. You'll avoid the hotter temperatures of summer and the cooler, wetter days of winter. This also means you can enjoy outdoor activities like hiking and cycling without extremes of weather.

For travellers interested in local cultural events and gastronomy, these shoulder seasons often feature regional festivals and harvest celebrations. These offer a genuine taste of Basque traditions and cuisine, from pintxos routes to local market days.
