Climb to mountain peaks for the best views of this picturesque loch, which has watersports activities, nature trails and medieval houses.

Loch Earn is a scenic freshwater lake that lies between the hills of the Scottish Highlands. It is 6.5 miles (10.5 kilometers) long and creeps over the boundaries of Stirling, Perth and Kinross. Bring your family for the watersports activities on the western point of the loch.

Choose from waterskiing, canoeing, sailing and other thrilling water activities from the Lochearnhead base.

Hike around the perimeter of the large lake and gaze up at the mountains looming over it. To the southeast of Lochearnhead is the majestic Edinample Castle, which dates from the 16th century. Hear about the owner, Black Duncan Campbell, who allegedly pushed a builder off the roof to avoid paying him. Continue east to encounter more stately mansions, such as Ardvorlich House.

Climb Ben Vorlich, a mountain rising to a height of 3,231 feet (985 meters) on the southern flank of the lake. From the peak, appreciate the panoramic views of the lake, the castles and the surrounding highlands. Fish for rainbow and brown trout from the shore or from a boat on the serene and placid lake.

On the southeastern part of the lake lies the 22-acre (9-hectare) Loch Earn Leisure Park, which has many water activities. Play golf on the 9-hole course while enjoying stunning views. Dine at the restaurant, relax in the bar and go shopping in the mini-market.

Taste local beers at the Loch Earn Brewery & Visitor Centre in St. Fillans. Relax with a few drinks in front of a vista of the eastern part of the loch.

Note how the lake has a tidal system caused by the wind blowing along the surface of the water. The leisure park is open from March to October.

Loch Earn is just east of the village of Lochearnhead. As part of Loch Lomond & the Trossachs National Park, it stretches across many small villages in the Scottish Highlands, such as Ardvorlich and St. Fillans. Drive east for 10 miles (16 kilometers) to reach the town of Crieff.
