Kalgoorlie-Boulder, often called simply Kalgoorlie, is one of the largest cities in the outback. It enjoys a location in Western Australia about an hour by plane from Perth, and adds a unique charm to the outback landscape. On a holiday to Kalgoorlie you can meander through the bushland of Hammock Park, cool off with a swim in the largest outdoor pool in Western Australia, and take a swing at the Nullarbor Links Golf Course. Whether you are on holiday with family, friends, or alone, Kalgoorlie is an excellent gateway to the world of the outback.
Kalgoorlie sits in the Goldfields-Esperance and has ample opportunities for fun. First, start your walkabout off with a tour of the Goldfields War Museum that pays homage to the citizens of the Goldfields who served in Australia’s major wars. Memorabilia such as medals, letters, and photographs give an inside look into the country’s war history from the Boer War all the way to Vietnam. After paying your respects to the veterans, take a walk through Hammond Park – the jewel of the city’s parks. There’s a miniature Bavarian castle decorated with over 40,000 gemstones, and wait until you see the animal sanctuary. Make new friends with emus, peacocks, and kangaroos. This city also sits in the middle of wine country, so when you’re done going a few rounds with a kangaroo, check out the Binduli Winery, only 5 km from downtown. Try the “Gold in a Bottle” wine which has a nugget from the local gold mine in it. Sip shiraz, pinot noir, and chardonnay while taking in a beautiful Western Australia sunset. Meat, cheese, wine, and a stunning view, what could be better?
The city’s location in the desert makes for a semi-arid climate. Summers are usually hot and dry, while winters are mild with some precipitation. Summer days can easily reach above 32 degrees Celsius and sometimes even reach 40 degrees. Winters are drastically different from the dog days. Average highs hover around 18 degrees making the days more than comfortable for fun. Nights are chilly, but you won’t need a fur coat or down suit to keep warm. There’s some rainfall during the winter months, but nothing like those wet seasons the tropics experience. Overall, we’d recommend taking your holiday on the backside of winter, fading into spring.
