Come visit and see our gorgeous 2024 room renovations! Beds, furnishings, art, decor - everything is ALL NEW. The amazing ocean front view remains the same ;-)

Hale Kai Hawaii Suites offers four oceanfront rooms (booked individually) and a spectacular, panoramic view of the blue Pacific Ocean and Hilo Bay. We overlook the popular Honolii surfing beach in a peaceful location just 2 miles north of historic Hilo Town. Revel in the best views in Hilo while at our pool and oceanfront lanai!

The Moana Room is a large room with king bed, small table with chairs, desk, WiFi, SMART TV, private bathroom with shower, small fridge/freezer, microwave, coffee maker, hot water pot, toaster, dishes and utensils, ceiling and portable fan, no air conditioning and sliding door to lanai. Continental breakfast items are stocked daily and we invite all guests to swim in the pool or lounge on our oceanfront lanai.

A few NOTES: One parking spot is provided per room in this quiet residential neighborhood. All Guest Rooms are facing the ocean on the lower level of the property and there are over 30 steps down (pictured) to traverse to the rooms. Guests are responsible for carrying their luggage to their rooms. Bookings limited to 2 guests per room (including children). Quiet hours are 9pm to 8am for the comfort of all of our guests, Mahalo!

While at Hale Kai (House on the Ocean) Hawaii, enjoy watching surfers, dolphins, and seasonal humpback whales during their annual migration to the Hawaiian Islands from the north Pacific. Quiet, beautiful, home base to explore the Hilo area

My wife and I spent three nights in the Moana Room as we explored the Hilo area and it was perfect for our needs. The room was spacious and clean and boasts an amazing view overlooking Hilo Bay. We made use of the pool and hot tub and loved listening to the crashing waves below while drifting off to sleep.

Nice ocean views

Great location right on the ocean cliffs and close to town. Easy check in process. Definitely was hot in the room during the day and early evening as there is no AC but luckily we were out most days doing things.

We loved the sunrise wake ups each morning and falling asleep to the ocean waves and salt breeze. The tropical vibes of all the floral and greenery around the place helped make it more and more like paradise found! We only stayed a couple of days because we opted to try both sides of the island for the different "vibes" but we were actually disappointed to leave and try something else because we knew it couldn't be "better"!!! It was nice to stay somewhere without the touristy feel. We highly recommend and would for sure return for another stay!!!!!!!!!

Lovely breakfast in the morning on your own private patio over looking the ocean. The pool was perfect and hot tub even better. The grounds the BNB are on is like a tropical garden. I made so many snail and Gecko friends! You might even be lucky enough to see dolphins swimming in the bay. In my personal opinion it's the best BNB on the big island. Can't wait to stay again!

Overall, I do not recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: The location here is absolutely gorgeous! The property is set on a hill that overlooks the ocean, where whales frequent! We were able to see whales right from the patio area in front of our room! The property has no AC, which we anticipated, but the only way to get air in the room is by leaving the screen slider open, with no way to lock it, which made me a little uneasy. The room would get very warm during the day, but thankfully, it cooled off fairly quickly once said door was open. The room was super cute & we loved the decorations, but the mattress and pillows were *awful.* It felt like we were sleeping on cement it was so firm (and the pillows were the same). They also provided a tasty breakfast each morning, which we really enjoyed. There was so much to love about this open-air property! If they update the mattress & pillows, we would definitely return.

Beautiful View

The weather in Hilo was very overcast most of the time we were there, which is something that obviously can't be controlled. The amazing part was that the view was still beautiful even with the drizzly weather. There were always surfers to watch from the pool area. We didn't use the pool or hottub. I did do yoga one morning by the pool. There was a beatiful sunrise the last morning we were there. The table and chairs outside our room were under a little overhang, so we could still sit outside and enjoy coffee or breakfast in the morning. Speaking of breakfast, my husband LOVED the muffins that were provided eahch day! I appreciated how environmentally friendly they were with even providing a little composting container for our food waste. There was a refrigerator with a freezer in our room and a larger refrigerator and freezer in the common room if needed. The room was very large, so we had plenty of space. The flowers along the stair walkway from the parking space to the room were lovely. There were whales spouting out in the bay each day. They were pretty far out, but it was still exciting to see! When I had questions, they got back to me right away and were very kind.

Beautiful must-stay location

Our stay was even better than I imagined and the reviews didn’t do it justice! Salt-water vacations does a fabulous job. It’s a picturesque spot, beautiful sunrises and amazing views. The breakfasts of fresh fruit, eggs and coffee were made even better by the magnificent sunrises. Our last morning we even saw a pod of dolphins swimming along the shore. We enjoyed relaxing in the hot tub and stargazing in the evening after full days of hiking and driving around the Island. The location is perfect to head quickly into Hilo, or go north along the picturesque coast. We did stay on Island time and go to bed early and get up early (by 7 am) and it seemed like others staying at the same time as us did as well. For our last night we had the place to ourselves. You can hear your neighbour guests, but everyone was respectful and just bring ear plugs or white noise if you’re a light sleeper. Comfy and spacious bed (Moana room). Overall we slept so well (10+ hours a night!). We loved the Big Island and the variety of adventurous things to do. This location will not disappoint. It is stunning, clean, well-stocked and beautifully maintained. Note- parking is tight if all guests are there and not for the faint of heart backing down the mini hill. You probably don’t want to go larger than a sedan.

Little sea-side bed and breakfast!!

Which was great by the way. We really appreciated the plain Greek yogurt cups, and real hard boiled eggs and fresh fruit of papaya and pineapple the first day!! Having this included is a huge benefit and makes this place unique. Probably one of the best "included" breakfasts we have ever had and we travel alot. I wish the place felt a little more private. Others from the other 3 rooms can walk right past your sliding glass door, but there is nothing that can be changed about that. But you either have a view of the water or you have your privacy. So u have to just think about that when changing or getting out of the shower or laying in bed. Also, not sure if anything can be done about this, but it can get stuffie inside the room because there is no cross flow of air. I wondered if a dehumidifier could be a good investment for each room? Also, they have done a good job of refreshing the rooms and making them modern and the shower update was nice. There are a few spots that are still a bit old, but overall I think the rooms were fabulous. They also had everything you needed in terms of amenities inside, from wine glasses, to set of plates, coffee maker, microwave, etc. The common room was also a nice surprise for guests to place extra food that they couldn't eat and pass to others who could use it. We loved seeing whales from our view and enjoyed seeing the surfers in the bay from our space! The privacy walls they have set up too are a great amenity and help with the privacy. Overall, very quiet, beautiful, well- appointed place!

Excellent Location! Free breakfast

Loved staying in this room. View to the ocean was spectacular. They would stock the fridge with fruits and yogurt for breakfast every day. Room has no AC and bathroom gets Hot but no big deal. Bed was super comfortable. There’s quite an amount of stairs to reach the roo.

Perfect holiday retreat

Hale Kai is simple but has all the necessities for a comfortable stay. The views were beautiful from the lanai and the pool with ocean view was an added bonus. It is the perfect location to explore Hilo.

Views for days!

My husband and I love the location of this rental and have stayed here twice. We always enjoy the daily breakfasts with lots of fresh fruit and the relaxing sounds of the waves. The pool was lovely and secluded. Definitely will stay here again.

We had to pull heavy drapes across our screen door for privacy therefore blocking any air flow. Room was dark. Asked for ice and we were told not part of the contract. Had to buy our own. Nice view. Difficult to drag luggage into room ... have to go down a set of stairs and then up. Parking available but very tight.

Great space next to the ocean

We had a nice stay at this space. The only cons were the hot tub didn't work, and our door wouldn't lock from the outside with the key provided, but the space was secluded and we felt very safe despite. We would certainly stay in this beautiful space again. Mahalo!

Quiet road. A short drive into town. Able to watch surfers at Honoli'i Beach. Saw whales from the lanai. Continental breakfast was filling. The driveway is quite steep. If reserving Moana, you might want to back in.

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: The guesthouse is located just 5-10 minutes north of Hilo, depending on traffic (morning rush into town will take longer). The views out of Hilo Bay are amazing. It is whale season and every morning we saw dozens of them out in the bay.Our room (Moana room) was clean but basic. We had a microwave, fridge, toaster, and coffee maker. Fruit and muffins provided.Not for people with mobility issues as there are steps down and back up to get in and out of the rooms. The driveway is also steep and it can be a challenge to get your vehicle out. The left turn onto the main road to Hilo can be tough as well during heavy traffic and at night with low visibiility.Overall, great place to stay during a visit to Hilo.
