There are mountain cottages, and then there are mountain cottages that have been loved by the same family for generations — where the wormy chestnut walls have absorbed decades of good summers, the stone fireplaces have warmed countless winter weekends, and the screened porch has watched more Highlands sunsets than anyone has bothered to count.
Laurelwood is the second kind.
Built in 1935 and perched above Highlands Country Club on Hudson Road, this original cottage wears its history beautifully — chunky stonework framing the grounds, schoolhouse windows letting the light in just so, farmhouse kitchen cabinets worn smooth in the right places, and three stone fireplaces distributed through the house like punctuation. It is unapologetically old Highlands. And in a world of renovated-to-within-an-inch-of-their-life vacation rentals, that is increasingly rare and quietly wonderful.
A House With Rooms That Have Personality - Four bedrooms across two levels, each with its own distinct character — because this house was furnished by people who actually cared, not a staging company working from a mood board. The main level hosts three bedrooms and two bathrooms alongside a kitchen that smells like butcher block and hardwood floors and every good meal anyone has ever cooked here. Upstairs, the king suite with its ensuite bath and wood-burning fireplace operates as a private retreat within the retreat — the room that whoever claims it first will not be giving up without a negotiation.
The Screened Porch is the Reason - The owners will tell you themselves: the big screened porch is where Laurelwood earns its place in your memory. Mountain views. Fabulous sunsets. Mature trees and shrubs creating a privacy that feels earned rather than manufactured. Whether it's morning coffee, a long al fresco lunch, or an evening watching the light change over the ridgeline, this porch has a way of making time feel more generous than it actually is.
Out front, a patio with a gas grill, firepit, and classic iron patio set handles the evenings when the screened porch gives way to open sky and the fire needs to be a little closer. Both outdoor spaces reflect the same unhurried sensibility that defines the entire property.
The Details That Matter - Three stone fireplaces. Wormy chestnut paneling throughout. Schoolhouse windows. Mature grounds with old stonework that took decades to look this good. A newly added EV charging station for guests — free of charge, because of course a house this thoughtful includes that too. Plenty of parking. Easily accessible. Five to seven minutes from downtown Highlands when the outside world eventually calls.
The owners believe you'll fall in love with Laurelwood.
They're right.
What our guests are saying...
"Highlands Getaway. We rented this house with another couple, and between us we have 3 children under 2. The house was perfect! The house had plenty of space, a beautiful fireplace and a wonderful screened in porch. The location is second to none. A short 5 minute drive to town makes the house an ideal location for anyone who wants to spend time in Highlands. Well be back!" - Rent In Highlands Vacation Rental Guest, Joe

Perfect for our family. Kids 2 and 4 had the best time. The house is so nicely decorated but nothing too precious. Loved all the fireplaces. Would definitely come back!
Great location, lots of room, fully equipped and well decorated.
A couple of small hiccups that were addressed by the mgt team. Our family loved it👍👍👏👏
Loved
Like staying at your wealthy friend’s mountain home
Laurelwood was a pleasure for all, comfortable beds and chairs, big rock fireplaces, well equipped kitchen, elegant dining room, lamps where you need them, custom curtains and bedding -our interior designer friend recognized some pieces from a well respected interior designer in Highlands.
Three old college friends enjoyed being together at Laurelwood for a weekend reunion. We were able to relax and reminisce in comfort, and enjoy the beauty of the mountains at the same time. The house met our needs; each of us had our own room with a comfortable bed; there were three baths, and a well-stocked kitchen so we could eat in as we chose and also enjoy the dining opportunities of Highlands for dinner. It all ended too soon.
Friends have been spending NY together for more than 20 yrs. Have many friends in Highlands. Enjoy cooking, eating, and hangin. Cozy house enjoyed the fireplace
Great, charming house. Well equipped, clean . We enjoyed the multiple fireplaces and patio w fire pit on the cool evenings. Would definitely stay again
We enjoyed our stay at Laurelwood so much. 10 minutes from town, it’s a beautiful home. Even though we were so close to downtown, it seemed miles away. The front porch was our favorite spot, and spent most of our time there.
Would definitely stay again!
We rented this house in July. It was very charming and cozy. House is a short drive to town. Note: not much of a view from the house. Would rent it again if so desired.
A very comfortable house in a beautiful setting convenient to town. Private and quiet. Beautiful living room and porch for relaxing or enjoying time together. Well stocked kitchen and lovely donning room. Must be glorious In Warm weather
