Hokone truly surprises me on this winter trip after having visited it with a tour group over 2 decades ago! It is not just a place of onsens or gateway to Mount Fuji as many who visited here would have come for! Hakone warrants a stay of at least 5 days to 10 days or even more if u can afford the luxury of a long vacation! After countless visits to Japan and having set foot on all the 47 prefectures and major sites I finally am able to just take it easy and travel like I live in this wonderful country! If paintings are not your thing and viewing arts indoor seems a bit claustrophobic then this is the museum for u! Out in the open air with countless amazing sculptures and also a Picasso gallery! One tip for new visitors to this part of Japan. Buy a Hakone Free Pass from Shinjuku station (which allows you to travel to & from Hakone as well as in the area for 2-3 days at steeply discounted prices) and make sure u ask for a brochures with vouchers inside. The vouchers will allow u to visit museums at ¥1000 each! That's a bargain for such fine museums and guarantee a smooth journey throughout!

Great place! Super friendly, kind staff. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Great location high on the mountain. In room onsen was nice for a quick private soak. The forest and rooftop public onsen were lovely and uncrowded. Breakfast buffet was delicious.

Check in was easy and smooth. The room was very clean. The toilet had its own room. Same with the excellent shower. Staff was excellent. They had free lockers where you could keep your luggage until check in time. Our only complaint was that they would not store our luggage after we checked out.
