Theatre Royal Hotel Kumara

10/10 Excellent
"We stayed in the Victoria suite, which was lovingly and thoughtfully restored from a former bank building. The wallpaper and furnishings and decor were quite impressive, as was the clawfoot bathtub in one of the bathrooms. Parking was available in the driveway right next to the suite. There was air conditioning that could be adjusted, and plenty of towels. A sink with provision to make coffee in the morning – would’ve been nice to have some glasses rather than just cups, but overall the place was lovely. There was a loveseat and several chairs in the living room, and the beds were made up beautifully and were very comfortable. There are glowworm caves at the back of the property, but we were slightly discouraged from going to see them by the gal who checked us in, so you might want to ask a few more questions. There is a glowworm wall just before you arrive in town on the left-hand side of the road, which is signed. You can have dinner or breakfast there – we chose to go into town which is about a 15 to 20 minute drive. It’s about 45 minutes plus to Hokitaka Gorge. Lovely place – I highly recommend it!"

A historic hotel gives guests the opportunity to stay in a building officially recognised with a national historic designation. Historic hotels throughout the world can take the form of castles, stately homes, palaces or even pubs, lodges, old police stations or skyscrapers — any building that's been identified as being of special interest. These types of hotels in Greymouth usually retain original characteristics such as period features or traditional architecture in their communal spaces or guestrooms.
What is the difference between a historic hotel and a heritage hotel?
They are quite similar. The term "historic hotel" is more common in the U.S., while you'll often hear "heritage hotel" in Asia and Europe. Heritage hotels draw their meaning mainly from the cultural value that the place has and how it shaped the community.

Yes. Every effort is made to preserve treasured traditions and historic facades, but hotel interiors are fitted with modern conveniences and safety features. Guests should expect the popular amenities you'd get from a hotel such as Smart TVs, WiFi and updated bathroom facilities. In Greymouth, booking a historic hotel doesn't mean you will stay in a place that's rundown or uncomfortable for guests.
