Visit Lima's first Spanish palace, which was build to solidify that country's 16th century presence in Peru. Built by Spanish conquistador, Francisco Pizarro, this site remains the residence of Peru's president and hosts many government meetings.
The palace was constructed in 1535 above an Incan burial ground. Known colloquially as the House of Pizarro, this historic landmark has been restored and reconstructed over the centuries to retain its original grandeur. Explore its grounds, learn about its architecture and visit a fig tree that is said to have been planted by Pizarro himself.
Plan your visit around noon to witness the changing of the guards. This flashy performance is a delightful display of blue-and-red uniforms and Peruvian flags hoisted on black poles. From the front, the palace grounds features rows of palm trees and an antiquated iron fence. Stroll through its manicured gardens, which are decorated with trees, shrubs and pebbles. Find the Government Palace in the historic centre of the city. Plan your stay as part of a tour of the districts other landmarks, including the Cathedral of Lima, the Aliaga Virreynal House and Parque de la Muralla (Park of the Wall). Keep your bearings with the Rimac River, which runs just north of the palace. For a curious site, walk through Desamparados Station, a former train stop that sits next door. Get to the palace on foot or catch a bus to Estacion Jirón de la Union.
