This 17th-century religious complex features a fascinating underground cemetery and an ancient library, found around its central Baroque-style church.

Experience the depth of Lima's religious heritage at the San Francisco Monastery. This 17th-century church is part of a large complex that held a Spanish community of priests. Admire its Baroque design and explore the nearby convent, temple and two separate churches, which are called La Soledad (The Solitude) and El Milagro (The Miracle). Avid historians will enjoy visits to the site's library and catacombs. This landmark was made a UNESCO site in 1991.

Though started in 1673, the church was not fully built until 1774. Having been extensively damaged by an earthquake in 1970, restoration efforts have returned it to its former glory.

The church's yellow and white exterior makes for a great photograph. From its fronl patio, admire its 17th century baroque design which reflects colonial European influences. Beneath the church, a spooky catacomb is fun to explore. This underground cemetery is estimated to be the tomb of over 75,000 people. Those uncomfortable with graphic sights may want to avoid these tunnels. Some remains can be seen.

Within the complex, a renowned library preserves the church's ancient texts. Browse a collection of 25,000 musky volumes, some of which predate Spanish colonization in South America. See the libraries prized treasure, a 1571 edition of the Holy Bible. Back in the church, stop by the impressive central altar, which is wood carved. The nearby corridors are paved with 17th century tiling from Seville. Note the church's tributes to Saint Jude the Apostle, one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus.

The San Francisco monastery is open daily and offers guided tours for a fee. These tours last around an hour and include entry into the catacombs.

Find this church complex in Lima's central historic district, just south of the Rimac River. Walk there from the adjacent Parque de la Muralla (Park of the Wall) or take a bus to Julián Piñeiro station, which is just across the river. Afterwards, walk to the city's busy central square, Playa Mayor, and see the Cathedral of Lima.
