Götaplatsen was a central point of Gothenburg long before it was paved and designed in its modern form. Its construction and tiling in 1923 was for the arrival of the World’s Fair in Gothenburg, which coincided with the city’s 300th anniversary. The beige paving matches the significant buildings around the square, which were constructed around the same time.
At the centre of the square is the spectacular form of Poseidon, who stands atop a fountain. This statue, designed by Carl Milles, pays tribute to the fishing history of Gothenburg and the importance of the sea to the city’s residents. Photograph the statue from behind to capture the magnificence of one of Gothenburg’s main thoroughfares, Avenyn. Here you’ll find shops, restaurants and architectural delights.
Stand in front of the statue for a great view of the Gothenburg Museum of Art. Locals sit on the steps and watch people passing by. In the museum, find a collection of works from both Nordic and European masters, including Monet and Rembrandt. To continue the classical experience, explore the nearby City Library or see a performance at the City Theatre or the Gothenburg Concert Hall. This hall is home to the acclaimed Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra.
Götaplatsen hosts several events throughout the year as the city’s main meeting point. Visit in August to see world-class bands and colourful decorations for the Culture Festival.
Götaplatsen is easily accessed in central Gothenburg by tram, taxi or on foot. Use the square to get between surrounding attractions. Driving is not recommended as there is no on-street parking and garages in the centre of the city can be expensive.
