The Speech House Hotel

8/10 Good

"We went to the speech house hotel in September 26. We had good weather which helped as we took our dog. The room was small and compact and no where to sit other than on the bed. The hotel itself looked very nice and as we had a dog we had to eat in the orangery which I'm thankful for as the other room to eat in looked very dated. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The menu was a bit limited especially if you were on a longer stay. I think the hotel would struggle to accommodate all the guests in the winter especially if it was raining as there doesn't seem to be enough rooms inside the hotel. Our stay was pleasant as we did a lot of walking so didn't spend a lot of time in the hotel other than meal times. I think the 15 pounds a day charge for a dog is a bit excessive as as we were only provided with a towel and dog bowl and most owners bring there own bedding for their dogs. We didn't think they even did the floor as there were still bits on it when coming back from a day out. Would l go there again probably if they charged a proper rate for a dog as if you went for a week it would cost you 105 pounds excessive in the least."

"A well appointed - but well lived in home. A number of fittings feel rather dated, and kitchen and dining space rather cramped even for 4 adults and 2 children. Beds were incredibly soft and pillows also could do we with a refresh. Overall a comfortable stay, and the ability to access the forest from your doorstep is a definite bonus - however you do feel you are staying in someone else's home, rather than a guest house of similar bookable venue."

"Zion Chapel is a wonderful place to relax and unwind in a beautiful location on the edge of the forest. Everything you could need is provided and we were welcomed with a lovely food hamper which included bacon, eggs, croissants, prosecco and a home-baked chocolate cake. There were also treats for the dog and dog bowls, beds and towels. The chapel has been beautifully restored and is cosy and welcoming with lovely lighting and loads of seating. The bed is super-comfy and there is a fabulous mezzanine level that looks over the village and forest. We loved the sound system that took full advantage of the high ceilings. We spent most of our time on the front patio enjoying the beautiful views and watching the buzzards overhead. You are surrounded by wildlife and we were lucky to see deer in the orchard on several occasions plus foxes, bats and the free-roaming sheep. There are so many beautiful walks right from the door and our measure of a great holiday is that we only used the car twice in nine days! The Heritage Centre has a lovely cafe and the White Horse pub is really friendly and welcoming, both in the village. We had the most amazing time and are looking forward to returning to this beautiful chapel. Thank you Vicky."
