The Queensland Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) concentrates almost exclusively on contemporary art from the Asia-Pacific region. Collections and exhibitions display a wide array of local, national and international artworks. With paintings, abstract sculptures, photographic displays and video installations, there is something to visually stimulate everyone. Get the kids involved and spark their artistic curiosity with some of the interactive child-friendly exhibitions.Opened in 2006 and nestled among beautiful gardens scattered with statues, the gallery itself is an impressive example of architectural planning. The spacious building is brilliantly designed to showcase each individual piece to its full potential, while allowing the visitor to move between artworks in a quiet ambience.GoMA places an emphasis on indigenous Australian artwork, which brings an immediate relevance to the exhibition. In this section, you will discover post-conceptual sculptures posing questions relating to the very nature of art, as well as video installations dealing with the complex issue of national identity. Also on display is a wide range of drawings, paintings and ceramics. Aboriginal art is also celebrated here with pieces including woven fibres and bark paintings.Continue your journey of artistic exploration and discover places, people and histories from the Pacific region, as told through a variety of media. Textiles from Papua New Guinea along with Maori works detailing New Zealand's colonisation also feature. Michael Parekowhai's The Horn of Africa is one of the most arrestingly outstanding sculptures in the collection. Prints, video installations and calligraphic pieces represent the Asian collection, with works from China, India and Vietnam, while artwork from the Western world and the Middle East is viewable in the International galleries.Make a day of it at GoMA with a trip to the on-site café, bistro or restaurant to grab a coffee or have a leisurely lunch before an exhibition.Free guided tours lasting approximately 30 minutes are also on offer. The Gallery of Modern Art is located in South Bank in the Cultural Centre. Public transport is your best option as parking is limited and expensive. Admission is free however specific exhibitions will require a fee. Check the website for details.
