• Air travel can be a cruisy experience if you pack the right gear. First things first, you'll need toiletry items, such as toothpaste, a toothbrush and some deodorant, a fresh set of clothes and a good read. What to wear on a flight:

• The aisles of a plane are no place for a fashion parade. Dress in comfortable layers and opt for shoes that are enclosed, flat and easy to take on and off.
• Most of us have heard about deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot condition caused by long periods of sitting. To lessen your risk on board, drink plenty of water, consider wearing compression tights or socks and move your lower limbs often.

The secret is to be prepared before you get to airport security. That way, you'll be hopping onto that plane to Toronto in next to no time. Follow these tips and get your holiday off to a terrific start:

• Be sure to have your travel documents and passport within easy reach. They'll be the first things you'll be asked for by airport security.
• Time to strip down. Well kind of. Your belt, jacket, keys and other small items, like your earphones, will be required to go through the X-ray machine. Make the whole process faster by removing them before your turn.
• All your electronic gadgets, including your phone and laptop, must also be separately scanned.
• Remove all liquids and gels from your hand luggage. They usually need to be sent through the X-ray scanner separately. Each item should be no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and everything must fit inside a quart-size (one litre), clear zip-close bag.
• The right choice of footwear can save you several minutes. Boots and heavy shoes are often required to be removed and separately scanned. Slip-on sneakers are usually not.
• Knives and other sharp items are prohibited in the cabin. They'll be seized at security, so put them in your checked suitcase.
