Wherever you're coming from, flying can be an enjoyable experience if you're prepared. We've made a list of handy hints that will help get your Spy escape started on the right note. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• Flying can be a great experience if you've got all the right things. Firstly, you'll want some basic toiletry items, such as toothpaste, a toothbrush and some deodorant, a clean set of clothes and a good book. Secondly, find room in your hand luggage for your electronic devices, chargers, medications and maybe a neck pillow too. Lastly, and most importantly, remember to bring your passport, travel papers and your credit cards.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Double-check that you don't have sharp objects (like a knife or scissors) hiding in the bottom of your carry-on luggage. Other prohibited items include flammable or explosive products, such as fuel and fireworks, and gels and liquids in containers with a capacity of more than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres).

What to wear on a flight:

• Go for comfort over style. Prepare for changes in cabin temperature by wearing layers, and pick slightly roomy, flat shoes like slip-ons.
• Most travellers have heard about deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition caused by long periods of sitting. To reduce your risk on board, drink lots of water, consider wearing compression tights or socks and move your lower limbs often.

• Security personnel first need to know that you have a valid passport and matching travel documents before you're allowed to proceed any further. Have them within easy reach, ready for inspection.
• Next up, both you and your hand luggage will be X-rayed. To make the process quick and painless, remove anything that is likely to set the alarm off. Items like your coat, belt and earphones need to go through the machine.
• For just a few minutes, you'll need to unplug from the digital world. Your tablet, phone and any other electronics also need to be sent through the scanner.
• Can't travel without your favourite cologne or perfume? As long as the volume is no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and it's stored in a zip-lock bag, you're permitted to bring it with you in your carry-on bag.
• Choosing your footwear wisely can save you a few precious minutes. Boots and bulky shoes are often required to be removed and X-rayed separately. Slip-on shoes are usually not.
• Sharp or pointed objects (like knives and scissors) are not allowed on board. They'll be seized at security, so put them in your checked baggage.
