As savvy travellers know, the secret is to be well prepared before you arrive at airport security. That way, you'll be hopping onto that plane to Negara before you know it. Follow these helpful tips and get your holiday off to a great start:

• Airport security personnel first need to determine that you have a valid ID and matching travel documents before you're allowed to proceed any further. Keep them within easy reach.
• Time to strip down. Well sort of. Your jacket, belt, keys and other contents of your pockets, like your headphones, will need to go through the X-ray machine. Make the whole process faster by removing them as your turn draws near.
• All your electronics, including your laptop and phone, will also need to be scanned separately.
• Remove all liquids and gels from your carry-on luggage. They usually need to be sent through the X-ray machine separately. Each product should be no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and everything must fit in a single quart-size (one litre), clear zip-close bag.
• Choosing your footwear wisely can save you a few precious minutes. Hiking boots are often required to be removed and X-rayed separately. Slip-on sneakers usually aren't.
• Sharp items are prohibited in the cabin. They'll be confiscated at security, so pack them in your checked suitcase.
